MEAT TRAY Songs With Soul Torah Center celebrates anniversary dinner with musical entertainment. I Suzanne Chessler Contributing Writer y ehuda Green, who sings in the style of Shlomo Carlebach and has per- formed with the iconic rabbi, will be the entertainer for the 39th Anniversary Dinner planned by the Sara & Morris Tugman Bais Chabad Torah Center in West Bloomfield. The event starts at 5 p.m. Sunday, June 9, at the Novi Sheraton and will honor Richard Luger with the Crown of Distinction Award and Janice Scharg with the Woman of Valor Award. Luger, who serves as the synagogue's ba'al koreh (Torah reader) and helped establish the congregation baseball team, tutors adolescents for bar and bat mitzvah services. Scharg is a spon- sor of the monthly Women's Circle events. "I sing my own music as well as the music of Shlomo Carlebach," says Green in a phone conversation from his New York home. "I grew up on many of his songs that make people happy and give them hope. "The songs have a connection to Jewish roots and bring a high level of emotion. There is a sweetness in these sounds and a feeling of getting elevated as a Jew:' Rabbi Carlebach, who wrote and performed music to inspire and engage Jews of diverse observations, died in 1994 after building a vast pres- ence outside of the rabbinate with many recordings and an international stage legacy. His most famous song, according to the New York Times, was "Am Yisroel Chai" ("The People of Israel Live"). Soul Doctor, a musical about the late rabbi, is expected to open this summer on Broadway. Green, in his 40s, has been a Carlebach fan since he was 5 years old and living in Israel. He immediately connected with the soulfulness of the sounds and absorbed their essence into his own style. "Shlomo Carlebach made a revolu- tion in my childhood," Green says. Two decades later, in England, Carlebach and Green appeared together for the first time and went on for additional performances in Israel. Those experiences led to Green's work at the Carlebach Shul in New York, where he continues to appear for two Sabbath programs each month. Although Green has gotten to know the Carlebach family while develop- ing an independent career, he does not perform with the rabbi's daughter Neshama because of strict religious observance. When Green visits Michigan, he will bring two guitarists and work with six other local musicians to enlarge the musical experience. His latest record- ing is Peace in My Heart. His first recording was Land of Your Soul, and that was followed by Yearning. Hebrew dominates the lyrics. "I write music for the prayers," says Green, whose earlier appearances in Michigan have been for a school, a pri- vate party and High Holiday services. "I want to bring unity to all Jewish people, whether Chasidic or secular." ❑ * Potato Latkes * Handcut Lox * Our Regular Tuna & Fat-Free Tuna Can't Be Beat! * Vegetarian Chopped Liver * Homemade Potato Salad Coleslaw $19.99 person $13.49 =.,„ On Star's beautiful I already low-priced meat or dairy trays Expires 6/15/13.
