H

umorously named "It's That Time
of the Month," a series sponsored
by Hillel of Metro Detroit provided
an open and secure environment for young
women, ages 18-29, to study Jewish texts
and discuss their relationships with God,
Judaism, family and the community.
The six-session program was generously
funded through a grant from the Jewish
Women's Foundation of Metropolitan
Detroit.
Rabbi Michele Faudem facilitated these
inspiring discussions with topics that
included Jewish identity, the role of the
Jewish community and the afterlife. Rabbi
Faudem's goal for the program was to help
young women understand what it is to be a
Jewish woman; how being Jewish is part of
everything one does and how one represents
herself.
Once a month through April, about a
dozen young women from several of the
campuses served by HMD met for dinner
and lively conversation. The participants,
comprised of undergraduate and graduate
students, represented nearly every denomi-
nation of Judaism. The first of its kind for
HMD, this women-only program provided a
safe space for young Jewish women to talk,
learn and discover together within a Jewish
context.

"I went because it helped me connect
with young Jewish women who I am not
normally connected with in the community,"
said one participant. "I never would have
met some of these women because they
attend other schools and don't live in my
area." Another participant said the program
"made me feel like a proud Jewish young
woman."
After each session, the participants often
commented on how quickly the two hours
had passed and expressed their desire to
continue these conversations with friends
and family members.
Co-chair Alyssa McMillan considers the
program a great success, especially because
many participants returned and inspired
friends to join them at subsequent sessions.
One participant said, "I continued to come
back to each session because the topics
were relevant to my life and helped me think
about the decisions I make."
HMD hopes to continue It's That Time of
the Month in the fall of 2013, with new top-
ics including humility, developing goodness
within ourselves and judging in justice. @

Danniell Nadiv of Ferndale is a recent grad-

uate of Wayne State University. She was a

co-chair of the event.
