more creative and innovative than the last
— happening in Detroit. Sitting on a floor
eating dinner and supporting deserving
nonprofits at Detroit Soup, visiting different
startup companies in the M@dison Building
Downtown and joining in on spontaneous
dancing around the sanctuary during ser-
vices at the Downtown Synagogue allowed
us to see Detroit in an optimistic and
self-determined light. Native, adoptive and
Metro Detroiters alike have unbounded love
for Detroit and are dedicated to seeing their
city succeed.
Our week in Detroit flew by, leaving us
with new friends, unforgettable experiences
and a different view of the world. We were
pushed out of our comfort zones and subur-
ban mindsets by being forced to think about

urban issues in both an academic and highly
personal way.
Not all of us plan on living in Detroit in
the future; however, we all created stronger
connections to the city — our city. We real-
ized that Detroit's challenges and opportuni-
ties aren't someone else's, but our own.
Back at the University of Michigan, we
are now 13 students who carry this message
around with us, hoping to share it with the
world. @
