BETTY LUCILLE
BOSNIAK COHEN, 91,
of Southfield, died
March 29, 2013.
She was the first-
born daughter of a
rabbi and an artist and
was raised in a house-
Cohen
hold that placed great
importance on the history and traditions
of Judaism, aesthetics and intellectual
pursuit; these values would stay central
to her throughout her life.
Betty's father, Jacob Bosniak, a gradu-
ate of the Jewish Theological Seminary,
was the founding rabbi of the Ocean
Parkway Jewish Center in Brooklyn; and
Betty, along with her mother, Sue, and
sister Mimi, was very active in the syna-
gogue's religious and cultural life.
A talented artist and ballet enthusi-
ast, she graduated from Erasmus High
School and went on to attend Hunter
College, ultimately graduating from New
York University with a bachelor of sci-
ence in education.
After several years of teaching kinder-
garten and early elementary students,
Betty met Lewis Cohen, who was in New
York on a Baruch Fellowship in physical
medicine and rehabilitation. The two
were married in August 1949 and soon
after moved to Detroit, where Dr. Cohen
began his own physical medical practice.
Throughout their life together, Betty
managed Dr. Cohen's office, the Cohen
household and was a dedicated mother
to their daughter, the late Judith Lynn
Cohen. Betty was also an avid gar-
dener, a talented hostess, a voracious
reader, a proud resident of Huntington
Woods and a travel enthusiast. She was
a supporter of the Jewish Theological
Seminary and other Jewish orga-
nizations and an active member of
Congregation Beth Shalom.
Betty and Lewis were married for
more than 60 years until Dr. Cohen's
death in 2010.
Betty leaves behind her grandchildren,
Caitlin Klein and Joseph Malcoun, and
Julia Klein; great-grandchildren, Eva,
Mayer and Lawrence Malcoun.
