EDE10125 CHOICE
Four years
in a row!
here's no doubt the Hank
Greenberg Memorial Golf
Invitational has a winning
formula.
It has become one of the area's premier
benefit golf outings during its 23-year
history — and not just because of the
special guests it attracts.
The invitational is a major fund-
raiser for the Michigan Jewish Sports
Foundation, which has raised more than
$1 million to help fight cancer since
1984. Cancer took Greenberg's life in
1986.
Honorees at this year's invitational
Monday, June 3, at Franklin Hills
Country Club in Farmington Hills
include Joe Torre, Tom Verducci and Oak
Park resident Bayla Hochheiser.
Torre, Major League
Baseball's executive
vice president for
baseball operations,
will receive the Hank
Greenberg Lifetime
Achievement Award
from Greenberg's son,
Joe Torre
Steve Greenberg.
Master of
Ceremonies Jeremy
Schaap from ESPN
will present the Dick
Schaap Award for
Media Excellence to
Verducci, a Sports
Illustrated senior
writer. Jeremy Schaap
Tom Verducci
is the son of the late
Dick Schaap.
The Barry Bremen Memorial
Inspiration Award, established in 2012
to honor the memory of "The Great
Imposter" and recognize someone who
has overcome monumental challenges,
will be presented to Hochheiser, a Gift of
Life Bone Marrow Foundation stem-cell
donor.
Adam Bremen, Barry Bremen's son
and the award's inaugural winner, will
make the presentation to Hochheiser.
The Breman Award was a new twist
for the invitational last year. There are
more new twists this year.
With the afternoon round of golf sold
out, there's now an opportunity to play
in the morning. Cost is $275 for a young
adult (age 35 and under) or $450 for an
adult (age 36 and older), both a substan-
tial savings.
The cost includes breakfast, lunch and
the evening program that features the
awards presentations, a sports panel and
live auction.
"We thought about having the morn-
ing round last year," said foundation
executive director David Blatt. "After we
sold out so quickly this year, we decided
to give the morning round a try and
we've had a great response'
Another new feature is a raffle for tick-
ets to the sponsors' dinner Sunday, June
2. All the award winners are expected
to attend the dinner. Each raffle ticket
(there are 200 of them) is $50. There will
be two winners, and each can bring a
guest.
Contact Blatt at (248) 592-9323 or
dblatt@michiganjewishsports.org by
Monday, May 13, to buy tickets.
There are more live auction items this
year.
Among the goodies that will be up for
grabs are an entry into Michael Jordan's
Flight Camp in California that includes
airfare and accommodations, a chance to
throw the ceremonial first pitch before
a Detroit Tigers game at Comerica Park,
and a golf foursome with former Detroit
Red Wings star Tomas Holmstrom.
For a list of all the live auction
items, to register for morning golf
and for sponsorship opportunities,
go to the foundation's website, www
michiganjewishsports.org, or contact
Blatt by phone or email.
Time To Apply
Applications are being accepted by the
Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation for
the Jewish News Male and Female High
School Athlete of the Year awards and
Bill Hertz Memorial Scholarship winners.
The athlete of the year awards are
based entirely on athletic achievement
by graduating high school seniors.
One male and one female Jewish
graduating high school senior athlete will
receive a scholarship, which is based on
financial need, academic achievement
and athletic participation. Scholarship
money helps pay for tuition during the
recipients' first year of college.
The scholarships honor the memory
of former foundation vice president Bill
Hertz.
Students can nominate themselves for
an athlete of the year award and schol-
arship. Nominations from a knowledge-
able adult, teacher, coach or parent also
will be accepted.
For applications, go to www.
michiganjewishsports.org . Questions?
Contact David Blatt at (248) 592-9323
or dblatt@michiganjewishsports.org .
Application deadline for both is July 5.
Winners will be notified by Aug. 15 and
honored this fall at the annual Michigan
Jewish Sports Hall of Fame induction
banquet.
