ara-Lynn Weiss has many rea-
sons to celebrate Mother's Day
this year.
One has to do with her daughter,
almost 10, keeping pace with the objec-
tives described in Weiss' book The Heavy:
A Mother, A Daughter, A Diet (Ballantine;
$26).
The text describes how the author,
after being told by a pediatrician that her
7-year-old daughter was obese, moved
ahead to establish a healthy eating envi-
ronment that brought down the girl's
weight.
"The book provides an honest account
of the reality of a family struggling with
childhood obesity:' Weiss explains in a
phone conversation from her New York
home.

of fledgling artist Asher Lev for the
first time.
The same can be said of the JET's
final production of the season, My
Name is Asher Lev,
Aaron Posner's adap-
tation of the Chaim
Potok novel. It is
hard to decide what to praise first:
the superb performances by actors
Mitchell Koory (Asher Lev), Naz
Edwards (the Women) and John
Siebert (the Men); the outstanding
direction by JET Artistic Director
David Magidson; or the power of the
play itself, with its universal themes
poignantly expressed by multidimen-
sional characters.

The play, set in a Chasidic Brooklyn
community in the 1950s, follows the
struggles of Asher Lev, a young art-
ist whose talent and unyielding need
to express it puts him at odds with
his parents and his community. His
father, Aryeh (Siebert), who travels
the world on behalf of the Rebbe, does
not understand why the boy spends
so much time "playing with crayons"
instead of studying Torah. His
mother, Rivkeh (Edwards),
is torn between the demands
of her role as dutiful wife and
mother and the diametrically opposed
needs of her husband and son. And
the young man is rent by the artistic
calling he cannot ignore and the tradi-
tions he has been raised to uphold.
As the show's title character, who
narrates his experiences from young
child to adulthood, Koory shines. He
brings passion, power and unrelent-
ing energy to the role, despite the
