ith day school enroll-
ment flat in much of
the country, Jewish
leaders are redoubling efforts to
emphasize the importance of for-
mal Jewish education as the train-
ing ground for the next generation
of community builders.
Here in Detroit,
"the future of
the Jewish com-
munity will come
from current day
school students:'
said Jim Berger,
a former board
president of Hillel
Day School in
Farmington Hills.
As part of the
school's annual
campaign, Hillel's
annual dinner on
May 19 celebrates
the overall corn-
AI
munity's goal "to
Joel Jacob
educate as many
Jewish children as possible Berger
said.
This year's dinner honorees
include Berger, director of quality
and warranty finance at Chrysler,
along with his wife, Karen, as well
as Joel Jacob, founder and chair-
man of the Bottle Crew, a global
supplier of glass and plastic bottles.
"The kids have gotten a fantastic
education, and they've gone on to
do great things:' said Jacob, whose
five children have attended Hillel.
"Hillel inspired all of us to become
more active Jews, to learn more, to
do more'
The dinner also celebrates the
dedication of the William M.
Davidson Sefer Torah written this
year for the school. The Torah
dedication begins at 9:45 a.m.
Sunday, May 19, with a parade
down Middlebelt Road. Meet at 14
Mile and Middlebelt roads. Last let-
ters of the Torah will be filled in at
10:15 a.m. at the school.
"[The late] Bill Davidson was a
mentor, a world leader in promot-
ing Jewish education:' Jacob said.
"To be an honoree now is a great
privilege for me and my family:'
The dinner begins at 5 p.m. at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek in
Southfield. Tickets are $180. To
RSVP by May 13, contact Cheryl
Schanes, director of development,
at cschanes@hillelday.org or call
