T
he guys from Downtown Fox
did it again.
For the fourth straight
season, they won the regular-season
and playoff championships in the B'nai
B'rith basketball league.
Their only slip-up this year was
having their 33-game winning streak
snapped by Pisgah-Zeiger. They hadn't
lost since the 2010 season.
Downtown Fox avenged the loss by
beating Pisgah-Zeiger in their next reg-
ular-season game and again 59-55 April
21 in the playoff championship game.
In the playoff semifinals played just
before the title game, Downtown Fox
beat Great Lakes Region 63-48 and
Pisgah-Zeiger beat Brotherhood 71-37.
Downtown Fox went 8-1 during the
regular season. Pisgah-Zeiger (7-2),
Brotherhood (2-7), and Great Lakes
Region (1-8) followed the leader in the
four-team league.
League games were played for the
first time at the Jewish Community
Center in West Bloomfield.
Bruce Nosanchuk is Downtown Fox's
player-coach. He said there are several
reasons why the team has done so well
the last four years.
"We play as a team:' he said.
"Everyone brings their talents to
the table and uses them to win. And
nobody is selfish. We each want to win,
even if it means giving up playing time
if we're not having a good game"
Devon Banks will always remember
the 2013 season. He tore his Achilles ten-
don in the final 10 seconds of the playoff
title game while playing defense. He was
scheduled to undergo surgery this week.
Also on the Downtown Fox team
were Steven Banks, Matt Chasnick,
Kevin Giles, Russ Kacin, Ross Niskar,
Bobby Raitt, and Kendell and Khalid
Walton.
League director Gary Klinger, athletic
chair for the B'nai B'rith Great Lakes
Region, said he's going to "promote the
heck out of the league" during the off-
season to build it back up to at least six
teams.
He feels the move to the JCC from
Walled Lake Central High School, the
league's home for the past 10-plus years,
was a positive one.
"The JCC is more centrally located,
and playing there gets the league more
involved with the Jewish community:'
he said.
Mother Nature Plays Through
Cold, sleet and rain have reigned so far
in the inaugural B'nai B'rith golf league.
The first week of play in the 18-week
season was scheduled for April 18, but
it was postponed until April 25 because
of bad weather. Rain washed out play
April 25.
Now opening today is Thursday, May
2, at Fox Hills Golf and Banquet Center
in Plymouth. There is no cost for the
first week (it's normally $21 per week,
not including cart, for nine holes). The
next two weeks will be used to establish
handicaps.
There's still time to sign up. Call
league organizer Gary Klinger at (248)
229-1816 or send him an email at
gkslurpee@aol.com. B'nai B'rith mem-
bership is mandatory to play in the
league.
