Raised in a secular home, British
singer-songwriter Alex Clare hooked
up with Chabad after studying in
Jerusalem and has been a practicing
Orthodox Jew for about five years. He
refuses to play gigs on Shabbat and
keeps kosher even while on tour. Clare,
who is best known for his dubstep-pop
hit "Too Close," told Jewish Telegraphic
Agency that his team helps him keep
certain religious laws: For example, his
bodyguards help ward off the mobs of
screaming teenage girls — and there
are many — so that nobody touches
him according to religious
laws of modesty. "I know
clubs and concert halls
are not the best place for a
nice Jewish boy, but every-
one has their life choices,
and this is mine," he told
JTA. Clare performs at
the Crofoot Ballroom
in Pontiac at 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday, May 7. $18 advance/$20 day
of show. (248) 858-9333; thecrofoot.
