U.S. Premiere
Of Anne Frank
Work Set May 7

Don't miss out!
Space is limited!

T

he Berkley School District
and Holocaust Memorial
Center (HMC) Zekelman
Family Campus in Farmington Hills
are co-sponsoring the American
premiere of My Name is Anne Frank,
a cantata written in commemoration
of the life of Anne Frank, on May 7
at Berkley High School (BHS) featur-
ing the school's orchestra and choir.
The performance will be the
complete and original orchestration
by composer Volker Blumenthaler,
and features solos by Hazzan Daniel
Gross of Adat Shalom Synagogue in
Farmington Hills and Cantor Penny
Steyer of Temple Shir Shalom in
West Bloomfield.
Not only are a high school
orchestra and choir premiering this
historic piece in the United States,
but also the composer and lyricist
Alexander Gruber will be visiting
from Germany to speak about their
inspiration to compose the piece and
hear it performed in its entirety for
the first time.
The cantata is the first of many
events the HMC is hosting this
spring and summer to celebrate its
recent acquisition from the Anne
Frank Center USA of a sapling from
the actual white chestnut tree that
brought Anne Frank solace as she
and her family hid from the Nazis
during World War II.
In addition to the dedication of
the planting of the tree, several edu-
cational events for children and their
parents are being scheduled. The
HMC is developing a study guide
for teaching about the Diary of Anne
Frank and the Holocaust.
The BHS orchestra and choir were
invited to perform the cantata by
the HMC and Dr. Guy Stern, direc-
tor of its International Institute of
the Righteous. Stern envisioned
high school students performing the
premiere to pay homage to Anne's
teenage Holocaust experience, and
invited Berkley's award-winning
orchestra and choir to participate.
This performance is free to the
public, but tickets are required
for admission. Tickets are limited
and only available on a first-come,
first-served basis through the
HMC. Contact Lawrence Willim, at
(248) 553-2400, ext. 24 or

org for tickets. The concert starts at
7 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, in the BHS
Auditorium, 2325 Catalpa,
Berkley.

VOTE YES

Building & Site Sinking Fund

"We value our home. We appreciate the West Bloomfield School
District for educating our children. And, we value the future.
That is why we are voting for the District's first-ever request for
a "Sinking Fund" millage on the May 7th ballot to maintain our
school buildings; and our school district. For the good of the
community, we urge our family and friends to do the same."

Bryna and Jeff Leib

"Voting YES stabilizes and improves the financial health of the West
Bloomfield School District."

Sid Rubin, Keego Harbor Mayor

"Vote YES to maintain not just the high quality of education our
children deserve and we have grown accustomed to in West
Bloomfield, but also to maintain our community's reputation and
our property values."

"1 believe it is important to have an excellent education system to
attract new families to move into our district. The Best Schools
attract the Best Students."

Annette Landwald-Kozin, Owner, The World of Travel

'As long time business owners in West Bloomfield for over
eighteen years, we appreciate how important the quality of the
infrastructure of our wonderful schools is to the vitality of this
community. We support the Building and Site Sinking Fund with
our YES vote because it just makes sense. We want the school's
limited funding to go toward curriculum and teachers, not parking
lot repair. We urge you to join us in voting YES on May 7."
