hen my friends or I return from
an Israel trip, we immediately
change our Facebook profile
picture to include photos on camels, photos
with Israel Defense Forces soldiers or pho-
tos kissing the Western Wall. I wanted to
give my Western Michigan University com-
munity the same experience.
Last year for Israel Peace Week, we host-
ed the Israeli Soldiers Speak Out tour and
WMU students were able to have IDF sol-
diers as their profile picture. When planning
Israel Peace Week 2013, I thought it only
made sense to have camel rides on campus
to ensure that every Western Bronco got to
experience a small part of Israel tourism.
After meeting with campus administra-
tors and Kalamazoo officials, we were
cleared to have camels on campus. Hillel
was fortunate to receive full funding from
WMU Student Assessment Fee.
Israel Peace Week is an annual event
on college campuses worldwide aimed at
presenting Israel as "a democratic, peace-
seeking nation attempting to coexist with
neighbors." It is scheduled each year for
the week after Israeli Apartheid Week as a
pro-Israel response. Israel Peace Week is an
international event organized independently

W

by student campus groups.
While promoting "Save a Horse, Ride a
Camel," I often encountered students who
asked if there would be real camels. Their
follow-up question was where do you find
camels? I always responded with a smile.
Yes, they are real camels with a hump, and
they are from a farm outside Chicago.
Finally, on March 13, a snowy and cold
windy day in Kalamazoo, Camel Rides USA
was on campus providing camels rides
— and new profile pictures for the WMU
community. Save a Horse, Ride a Camel was
a huge success and Facebook, along with
Twitter, were blowing up with pictures and
tweets about camels on campus.
Students and staff waited in line up to 40
minutes for a camel ride and photo. Save a
Horse Ride a Camel was a wonderful event
that attracted 250 camels riders — and
hopefully 250 new or renewed supporters
for Israel. ❑
