T he Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit drew community members to help create a beautiful mural on April 11 at the JCC in Oak Park. "The Colors of Kindness:' pre- sented by the JCC's The Active Life (TAL) department, gave everyone a chance to make their artistic mark on the mural, which will be kept on permanent exhibit at the JCC in Oak Park. Local artist Daniel Cascardo, whose works adorn everything from pizza boxes to sculptures, created the outlines of a painting to be com- pleted by those in attendance. The idea for the program was inspired by the Kindness Project, an initiative of the JCC and Partners in Torah, which seeks to make people more thoughtful and aware of their actions. ❑ Artist Daniel Cascardo with the canvas he created as a starting point. Magic Moment Yad Ezra's annual fundraiser honors Jack and Miriam Shenkman. 0 n April 18, Yad Ezra hosted Vanish Hunger, its annual spring event, at Hockeytown Cafe in Downtown Detroit. The event featured light snacks, spirits, silent auction and a raffle. The entertain- ment of the evening included Shimshi, the resident magician at the Wynn Las Vegas. He met with guests during the first hour before his show, performing individual magic for them; he then put on a bigger show in the City Theatre attached to Hockeytown. The event honored Jack and Miriam Shenkman for their continued commit- ment to Yad Ezra and raised enough money to purchase one month's worth of groceries for 1,300 families or 3,300 individuals that the Berkley-based kosher food pantry serves on a regular basis. ❑ 16 May 2 • 2013 Magician Shimshi, center, posing with Lindsay and Josh Dudovitz and Jake and Noah Cooper, all of Huntington Woods Elaine Beresh of West Bloomfield, speaking on behalf of her parents Jack and Miriam Shenkman Chairs Nancy Kleinfeldt and Amy Schlussel, both of Huntington Danny and Sherrie Singer of West Bloomfield and Ira and Woods, and Suzanne Jacoby of Birmingham with Shimshi Barbara Zaltz of Huntington Woods
