sales.
Still, Manilow complained, and one
day, in a fit of pique he now regrets,
Davis told him, "If you were Irving
Berlin, we'd know it by now."
"We were just two Jews from
Brooklyn going at it, and no one was
mincing words:' Davis wrote.
"It all ended up wonderfully, how-
ever:' he said. "And I'm thrilled I
just saw Barry on Broadway. Almost
40 years later, he's still a headliner
and a star, and we both still cher-
ish each other's contributions to
our respective careers. Barry led to
Dionne Warwick, who led to Whitney
Houston."
This all seems pretty far from
Brooklyn.
"I went to Hebrew school, and I
was bar mitzvahed. I grew up attend-
ing both the yeshivah in Crown
Heights and the Brooklyn Jewish
Center, also in Crown Heights.
"Ultimately, I and my family still
celebrate the occasions. It's not a tem-
ple- or synagogue-going life for me
candidly. But I do respect the tenets
of Jewish education. I do respect the
history of Judaism and the quest to
remove this tremendous prejudice
over the years that has affected
everyone Jewish," says Davis, the
recipient of an honor from the Anti-
Defamation League.
"I identify with that, and I certainly
pledge myself to be proud of my heri-
tage. And — even if it's not in a reli-
gious way —to celebrate Passover and
Yom Kippur and Chanukah and the
importance of those occasions and
bring the family together as a unit."

Posner, married with a 17-month-
old daughter, writes in retreat. After
thinking through adaptations for
a long time, he goes someplace by
himself to do the actual writing.
While starting out doing adapta-
tions that are very true to the origi-
nal work, Posner has moved on to
adaptations that are further afield
from the original.
"Judaism has been important
in my life, and I connected with
Chaim Potok at a time when I would
identify as Jewish but also would
question what that meant," says the
writer-director.

Davis pauses when asked if his
Jewishness played a role in his busi-
ness success.
"I don't know how to separate
Jewish from Brooklyn from education
and childhood life. I do know and
emphasize this throughout the book:
There is no question of my appreciat-
ing the importance of family; making
sure [we] don't become loving strang-
ers is second-nature to me.
"When my parents died, it was
family — my sister and my aunt —
who saw me through tremendously
painful periods. Whether it's the clan
that comes together on the Jewish
holidays or the identity of the Jewish
people, it's hard to separate them, and
that was the reason for the pause. I'm
certainly affected by my upbringing,
by my education and my life patterns
[in everything I do].
"Basically, I'm totally relationship-
oriented:' explains Davis, currently in
a seven-year relationship with a man.
"Do I feel I could have been
similarly attracted to a woman?" he
writes. "The answer is yes. I know
bisexuality really exists, and I also
know that society is moving forward
ever so slowly on these issues.
"My two marriages had failed, but
neither failed for sexual reasons. I
don't regret either marriage, and I
have two wonderful children from
each who are as fully a part of me as
are my grandchildren.
"I hope with all my heart that the
issue of sexual preference and the
prejudicial attitudes concerning it
recede into the past and become mat-
ters of purely historical interest to all
generations to come:'
