Ballo of Royal Oak has a
special passion for teaching
children with special needs. A former
advertising executive, Ballo found
work-life balance in her yoga practice
as well as "a way to manage the chal-
lenges of life and stay healthy:'
Now her mobile yoga studio pro-
vides yoga to businesses and schools,
including ePrize and Cranbrook, while
accommodating a growing niche for
children in the special needs commu-
nity with autism spectrum disorders
(ASD), Down syndrome (DS), ADHD
and pervasive development disorder
(PDD).
Typically, families of children with
special needs have unique needs, too,
including a strong desire to connect
with like-minded families for sup-
port, friendship and resources. While
children's yoga classes are plentiful in

Metro Detroit, larger public classes
may not bode well for kids with special
needs. So it was no stretch for West
Bloomfield moms Kim Collins, Debbie
Hack, Suzy MacDonald and Tamara
Moin to tap the mobile Belightful Yoga
studio for private home instruction for
their children, who are classmates at
Lone Pine Elementary School in West
Bloomfield.
Hack, a member of Temple Shir
Shalom, and her daughter Lexi, 8, who
experiences social and anxiety chal-
lenges, tried classes like kickboxing
and karate, but found the private yoga
dynamic ideal. "Unlike other sports,
yoga is not competitive Hack said.
Yoga encourages kids to work at their
own pace without comparing them-
selves to others, and kids often feel a
sense of pride just by participating. The
mirroring of poses soothes, comforts
and reduces anxiety A regular practice
serves up a structure of predictability
and repetition, with no surprises —
perfect for kids with special needs.

Michigan Autism Plan

The Michigan Department of
Community Health released
its Michigan Autism Spectrum
Disorders State Plan calling for
more early screening, better train-
ing for primary care providers, a
state information clearinghouse
and more on March 18.
Lt. Gov. Brian Calley said. "It
was an honor to sign the autism
insurance legislation last year, and
I'm glad to see that our efforts
have not stopped there."
Calley has a daughter with
autism. He signed a 2012 bill
requiring insurance companies to
provide autism treatment cover-
age for children. There is no time-
table for implementation of the
plan yet.

The plan will address the needs
of 16,000 Michigan public school
students with Autism Spectrum
Disorders (ASD) and 50,000 indi-
viduals with ASD in the state,
according to a State of Michigan
statement.
April is Autism Awareness
Month. ASD includes autism,
Asperger syndrome, childhood
disintegrative disorder, pervasive
developmental disorder and Rett
syndrome; all are neurological
impairments that cause social,
communication and behavioral
challenges. One in 88 children
in the United States falls on
the spectrum, according to the
Centers for Disease Control
