Eden Gardens Block Club wins $3,000 grant.

LAUREL PARK PLACE, LIVONIA

Doin' It

Fund (Di4D), administered
by CommunityNEXT (a
division of NEXTGen
Detroit at the Jewish Federation
of Metropolitan Detroit), and in
partnership with the national Jewish
service organization Repair the World,
hosted its second round of micro-
grant competitions, on Sunday, April
14, at Detroit Farm and Garden.
The micro-grants, funded by
proceeds from last summer's Pitch
For Detroit charity softball game,
go to support grassroots initiatives
aimed at promoting positive social
change in Detroit.
For this round, grants were
awarded around the topic of
environment. Each finalist had a
very strong environmental impact as
well as the capacity to meaningfully
engage volunteers in the work they
are doing.
Eden Gardens Block Club was
the first-place winner, receiving a
$3,000 grant. The Eden Gardens
Block Club in Detroit has partnered
with the Isaac Agree Downtown
Synagogue to build a community
garden that not only provides
healthy food to local residents, but
also is growing healthy relationships
between neighbors and young
Jewish adults involved in the city.

"We were very happy when we
heard we were one of the finalists
and absolutely thrilled when our
name was called as the winner
of the Di4D grant. The two other
finalists had truly worthy projects
and the votes were close," said
Polly Jones, Eden Gardens Block
Club secretary. "We plan to use
the grant funds to purchase tools
and equipment for our garden as
well as supplies for walkways and
benches. We are so thankful to the
Di4D Fund and CommunityNEXT for
making these grant opportunities
available."
Adds block club president Karen
Knox, "We plan to work closely with the
other groups since they, too, are in the
same area. We feel it was a win-win-
win situation. We were able to network
all for the betterment of Detroit."
Second-place winners were the
313 Project, a nonprofit that will
use the funds to purchase materials
and supplies for its first East Side
clean-up day, which got $1,000.
Third-place winners, the Michigan
Urban Farming Initiative, which
uses agriculture as a platform to
promote education, community and
sustainability, received $500.
Another round of grants will be
opening soon. Keep your eye on www.
doitfordetroit.com for updates. ❑

Jewish mothers are iconic. They have been
lampooned by comics — and Jewish children — for
years, but no one can doubt their love. Tell us in 200
words or less why your mother reigns supreme —
and maybe you'll win one of our three great prizes,
including gift cards to local restaurants and more.
