The Jewish Visit JNonline.us Theological Seminary Vam, 1832130 32 April 25 • 2013 JN single, large cheese pizza is usually just the right size for one typi- cal family. But a specially offered 14-inch kosher pizza went a lot further on April 2, creating the ability to feed five large families — for two weeks. The key was not in cutting the first pizza baked after the end of Passover at Jerusalem Pizza into minute slices, but rather in the manner of its payment. Instead of being purchased, the pizza was won by the highest bidder in an eBay auction creat- ed by the Southfield restaurant, with proceeds going to Berkley- based Yad Ezra, Michigan's only kosher food pantry. "We created the auction as a way to turn the purchase of a single pizza into funds for food for many local people through Yad Ezra: said Brian Jacobs, owner of Jerusalem Pizza with his wife, Rivka. "This year's bid was the highest yet." The auction was won with a $511 bid by a regular customer from Southfield who chose to remain anonymous. "We bid in earlier years and never won," the donor said of the annual fund- raiser. "We did it because it was a fun way to donate to Yad Ezra, a cause we strongly believe in. I shared the pizza with my wife and oldest son, the only ones awake that late." Each month, nearly 3,600 individuals in the Metro Detroit Jewish community receive food, health care items and household goods from Yad Ezra. In 2012, the agency distributed 1.1 mil- lion pounds of food, with most of its revenue coming from indi- vidual contributions. "The juxtaposition of auction- ing off pizza, a food that every- one loves, following Passover and the holiday's strict food restrictions, is another reminder of our journey from slavery to freedom and our responsibilities to ensure that all who are hun- gry can eat:' said Lea Luger, Yad Ezra executive director. ❑
