Jonathan's unique qualities and his
grief in knowing he will never know
the man his son would have one day
become.
"Suddenly, and without warning,
my son was gone the statement
read. "If he was a soldier in war, this
could be somehow processed. If he
was struck down by a drunk driver,
then my mind could [would have to]
accept the loss. But Jon was in peace-
time West Bloomfield, Mich., two
short weeks from graduation, at the
home of his grandmother [he called
her `Bima l, getting ready to go out
with his buddies, in his room ... in
his shorts. Bima put on her warpaint
and she came gunning for my boy:'
Speaking in her own defense,
Layne said she never intended to hurt
her grandson and was sorry for what
she had done and the pain she caused
her daughter.
"I know what I've done she said.
"I feel that pain:"
She said the Hoffmans had asked
her if Jonathan could live with
her, and that she had pleaded with
them to come and intervene when
Hoffman got involved with drugs.
While she was speaking, Jennifer
shook her head repeatedly and whis-
pered, "She's lying!"
Layne ended by apologizing again
and asking the judge for leniency.
"I don't want to die in jail or pris-
on. Please she said, sobbing.
Before delivering her sentence,
Langford Morris addressed the
defendant directly, saying she found
it troubling that Layne did not call
the police before deciding to take
a loaded gun upstairs to confront
Hoffman during an argument.
"Grandmothers are supposed to
be protected, and grandmothers are
supposed to protect:' said Langford
Morris. "There was a point, many
points, where you could have called
the police and they would have come
... you did not have to keep shooting
him. These were hollow-point bullets
designed to have a devastating effect:'
Langford Morris, saying she saw
no reason to deviate from the recom-
mendations stated in the probation
report, sentenced Layne to 20 to 40
years, with an additional two years
for the felony firearm charge, with
one-year credit for time already
served. She also was ordered to pay
restitution of $16,666.75 plus addi-
tional state costs and crime victim's
fees.
Layne, dressed in an orange prison
jumpsuit, stared at her husband as
deputies handcuffed her and led her
away.
Sabbota said he plans to appeal. E
