wo Jewish News editors
were honored by the Detroit
Chapter of the Society of
Professional Journalists on April 17.
Story Development Editor Keri
Guten Cohen won the coveted first
prize in the highly competitive cat-
egory of best feature story. Her story,
"iPad Junkie," was the portrait of artist
Richard Shulman — whose medium
was Apple's versatile electronic tablet.
Cohen's story, which appeared in the
JN's Red Thread magazine on March
29, 2012, was touted by the judges as
"well written" and "entertaining:'
Cohen said,
"Richard's story was
compelling from the
outset — a reluctant
lawyer from a fam-
ily of lawyers who
really wants to be an
artist. Since the story
appeared, Richard has
Keri Guten
been in an exhibition
Cohen
in Los Angeles and
was flown to Stockholm to create live art
at a conference before 1,500 people.
"I previously wrote an art column
every Sunday in the Detroit Free Press
for eight years:' Cohen said, "and this
story also brought me back into that
passionate, creative world of artists:'
The contest, judged by out-of-state
journalists, pitted Michigan newspa-
pers of similar circulation sizes.
Contributing
Editor Robert Sklar
took home two
first-place awards in
the prestigious cat-
egories of Editorial
Writing and General
Column Writing.
Robert Sklar
Sklar's editorial of
Oct. 18, 2012, criti-
cizing an anti-Israel letter to Congress
from 15 American Protestant leaders
was praised by the judges as "thought-
ful" examination of a double standard.
Likewise, Sklar's columns, which also
appear in the JN's Points of View pages,
were lauded by the judges, who noted
that "clear writing and thorough report-
ing made Sklar's columns stand out:'
Sklar said, "In the world of journal-
ism, it's certainly a high honor to be rec-
ognized for excellence by your peers.
"More importantly, these top honors
against a host of other outstanding
Michigan publications validate the
important and serious role the Jewish
News plays in helping shape the tone
and direction for the Jewish community
locally, nationally and internationally."
