Taglit-Birthright Clarifies
Its Link To Hillel, CAMERA
Regarding the story "Birthright Trip: MSU
Student Urges Participation in Program
that Examines Bias Towards Israel" (March
21, page 55), Taglit-Birthright Israel would
like to clarify a few points.
Taglit-Birthright Israel has received a
private donation, which we have shared
with Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish
Campus Life. Hillel coordinates Birthright
trips. As a result of this donation, Hillel
will expand their trips to include a post-
trip follow-up media component through
a new partnership with the Committee
for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting
(CAMERA). Birthright has not entered
into a partnership with CAMERA.
We are proud of this addition to the
Birthright trips. The inclusion of CAMERA
is reflective of our desire to offer trip par-
ticipants a range of educational programs
to give a wider view of Israel as it pertains
to today's world. In addition, Birthright has
teamed with One Voice, Neve Shalom, Ein
Shemeer and Merchavim to bring unique
elements to upcoming trips.
The project will generate enthusiasm,
allowing students to transfer the excitement
they feel while in Israel into a continuing
and productive activism.

Talk About The Positive,
Not Disgraced Ex-Mayor
It was with great surprise and won-
derment why former Mayor Kwame
Kilpatrick appears on the JN cover
("Beyond Kwame," April 11).
This thug has stolen, lied and
more, but you call him a fallen hero.
Contributing Editor Robert Sklar appears
to sit at the feet of the Kilpatrick rhetoric,
and so do you. Why?
Was this the most important happen-
ing for the week? His rhetoric led follow-
ers, but his intent led him to jail. I believe
you are printing sensationalism. That, I
submit, is not a task worthy to follow.
Stay with the great work being done at
the Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue,
the end of the dream of Rabbi Sherwin
Wine of Birmingham Temple, the clas-
sical "doer for good" David Hermelin.
These, I submit, are the subjects we must
continue to promote.
Our job, as I see it, is to teach. We
learned nothing being mesmerized by
false leaders and false gods. Kwame
should be left in jail. Let's talk about Dan
Gilbert, Peter Karmanos, the Schostaks
— the true leaders and doers of good.
This is our lesson to promote.

C

NN's Jessica Yellin, a fixture
of Washington, D.C., politi-
cal coverage since 2003, will
be in Southfield Wednesday, May 1, at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek as the lun-
cheon speaker for its annual Lois Linden
Nelson's Woman's World fundraiser.
Yellin came from
anchoring at MSNBC
in Florida to work
for ABC, providing
coverage for World

News, Good Morning
America and Nightline.
She joined CNN as
a Capitol Hill corre-
Linda Yellin
spondent in 2007 and
became White House
correspondent in 2011.
"We're very pleased to have someone
of Ms. Yellin's stature for our annual
event," said Linda Cohen, president of
the Shaarey Zedek (CSZ) Sisterhood. "It's
generated a lot of excitement among our
members and friends in the community."
The event also honors a Woman of
Valor, a woman who has distinguished
herself in giving to the congregation, the
community and the pursuit of Jewish ide-

als. This year's Woman
of Valor is Dina
Brodsky, a beloved
figure in the commu-
nity who has donated
generously to numer-
ous organizations
including the Jewish
Theological Seminary, Dina Brodsky
Yeshiva Beth Yehudah,
Tamarack Camps, Frankel Jewish
Academy, Hillel Day School and Bar Ilan
University. She has been a member of
Shaarey Zedek for more than 40 years.
Another component of the event is a
day of shopping that benefits the con-
gregation. Boutiques are open free to the
public from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., with a por-
tion of all sales going to the fundraiser.
Tickets to the luncheon, which starts at
11:45 a.m., begin at $54.
An "Over the Top" raffle also will be
held with a variety of high-end prizes
including gift cards, dining experiences
and the grand prize — a piece of fine
jewelry from Tapper's. The event chair is
Susan Kozik Klein.
For tickets, call (248) 357-5544, or go
to www.11nwomansworld.org.
