was a big part of her family, she
also recognized that she was not
a business person at heart and
wanted more time to spend with
her family. But, she takes comfort
in the fact that General Linen will
continue and that the employees'
jobs are secure.
"I know the present owner will
do very well;' she said. "We feel
so good about the future of the
company and we're happy that
we were able to make a contribu-
tion to the city of Detroit and our
employees:'
Dwyer is equally optimistic
about the future. "This is a very
good industry and I think the
economy is turning around in
Detroit:' he said. "We're going to
make some investments in the
company to improve the infra-
structure so we can continue to
grow. Helping our employees and
the community is really what it's
all about."
Even though the Schumers are
no longer in the linen business,
there's no doubt that General
Linen will continue to remain an
important part of their family
tradition.
"There's an old Schumer family
joke," Schwartz said. "When we
go to a restaurant, everyone else
will be looking at the menu, but
our family will be looking at the
tablecloths."
The Schumers and Schwartz
live in Bloomfield Hills and attend
Congregation Beth Shalom in Oak
Park. The Schumers have always
supported Jewish causes including
the Jewish Theological Seminary,
the Jewish Federation, the Jewish
National Fund, the Weizmann
Institute in Israel and Hebrew
University. They also donate to a
number of local Detroit organiza-
tions.
"I think my parents will look
back and say that the business
was good to them," Schwartz said.
"It was good to us, to our employ-
ees and to the city of Detroit:'
