The three partners divide the responsibilities according to their own areas of expertise. Chutz handles the business development, Milgrom oversees the technical aspects, and Gillman promotes the company by reaching out to other special needs parents and organi- zations that assist individuals with disabilities. "I have made a lot of con- nections locally and around the world," said Gillman, who also publishes a blog called "I'm Just That Way and That's Just Me" (www.imjustthatway.com ). She said local organizations, such as JARC and Friendship Circle, have responded positively when shown the Birdhouse system. "It's designed for parents by peo- ple who get how stressed for time parents are," Gillman said. The program gives users the ability to visualize and record med- ications, therapies, mood changes, sleep, toileting and "meltdowns," a common occurrence with children who have autism. "The goal is to see patterns and correlations so parents can better understand what's working and what needs to change," Gillman said. Birdhouse for Autism currently has about 25 users, who provide feedback to help Chutz and his partners fine tune the program. There is currently no charge to use the system. "I've been using Birdhouse to track my son's therapies, sleep pat- terns and medications:' said Renee C., a Farmington Hills mother who asked that her last name not be used. "It has been helpful because, as a result, I have been able to identify a pattern as to when and how often he randomly wakes at night. I have now identified what I believe is the primary cause for this ... and I am taking steps to help to minimize his waking occurrences" Chutz hopes to eventually expand the Birdhouse user base and to develop similar programs for other kinds of health issues. "We started with autism because that's what we know," he said, "but it lends itself to other conditions, such as ADHD." The group is also looking for web developers to help expand and enhance the program. For more information, visit www.
