Burton Gordin Story
Was Accurate Portrayal
I am the cousin of Burton Gordin.
Our family wishes to express our
appreciation to Publisher/Executive
Editor Arthur Horwitz for his cover
story last week, "Who Killed Burton
Gordin," and the editorial on page
9, "Justice And Remembrance For
Burton Gordin."
Burt was a wonderful and sensitive
person. The article clearly portrayed
the person that he actually was.
I and most of the family members
believe Burt was assassinated for
political reasons. The police theory of
a robbery gone bad, in my opinion,
was a distraction and has no factual
basis. Due to the violence, prejudice
and hatred at the time, I have great
doubts if the investigation was thor-
ough. It ain't over till it's over!
I am in the process of gathering
data and hopefully will have a book
published in honor of Burt. Since his
murder, the silence has been deafen-
ing.

Head Start Preschool
Funding Is Inadequate
Putting the burden of sequestration
on the backs of at-risk children and
their families is a very bad idea for
our children, for the state and for the
country.
Children in Head Start are selected
because of poverty or disability. Head
Start programs are designed to help
these students reach their potential in
education and their ability to earn a
living, and the Head Start staff is great
at what they do.
When a Head Start student starts
kindergarten he/she is ready to start.
In the long run, Head Start saves
money and lives.
The current continuing resolu-
tion (CR) contains a small increase
($33.5 million) for Head Start, but
that is not enough to cover the recent
sequestration cuts. The bad news is
that Congress did not find a way to
use the CR as an alternative to the
short-sighted and devastating auto-
matic cuts the Congress is forcing on
Head Start, WIC, child care and other
important programs.
Cuts to these programs will cost all
of us dearly in the long run. Studies
show that money spent in preschool
is returned to the economy many

Mother's

CONTEST
n honor of Mother's Day, the JN wants to know why you think your
mother is the best in Metro Detroit. (You know she is, so just enter
already!)
Jewish mothers are iconic. They have been lampooned by comics -
and Jewish children - for years, but no one can doubt their love. Tell
us in 200 words or less why your mother reigns supreme - and maybe
you'll win one of our three great prizes, including gift cards to local
restaurants and more.
Email your entry to kcohen@renmedia.us by May 1, along with a jpg
(500k-1mb) of a family photo that includes your mother. (Avoid the guilt,
send that email now!) ❑

times over.
In Southfield, the Head Start pro-
gram does not serve all of the stu-
dents who apply. The program could
easily serve double the number of
students. How, then, do we justify the
cuts in funding? We do not! There are
other ways to get the money.
It's time to let our Federal govern-
ment know that we are unhappy with
the cuts to education and that we are
unhappy with a government that does
not meet the needs of our students.
Call your representative and senators
and tell them.
