Identical twins share love of music.

M

is and Sydney Schmier,
15-year-old twins living in
Bloomfield Hills, appear to
be identical in only two ways: sharing a
love for performing today's music and
playing volleyball.
Yet, even in their shared musical
interest, differences exist. While Sydney
is drawn to composing and singing, Mia
takes to drums.
Those different performance prefer-
ences seem to strengthen their relation-
ship as they get more deeply involved
in establishing concert and recording
careers.
There's a lot of teamwork as they cre-
ate and present songs with their band,
Stereo Jane (formerly See Jane Rock).
They describe their style as a combina-
tion of rock, pop and Motown.
Their one-song music video, "Sing IC
soon to be released, will be presented
live at the Majestic in Detroit, where the
teens will stage a free concert at 9 p.m.
Saturday, April 13.
"Music will be my life says Sydney,
a ninth-grader at Andover, where her
favorite subject is geometry. "I never get
nervous on stage. I've loved being there
since my dad pulled me up to sing with
him at [the former restaurant] Memphis
Smoke when I was 7."
The sisters, whose family has been
active in Temple Israel, developed their
interest at home, where their dad, Mark
Schmier, rehearsed guitar and singing
for performances with local bands, and
their mom, Holly Baird, practiced ballet.
"I played in bands for years, and
the girls heard my music all the time
recalls Schmier, who manages his
daughters' projects. "A drummer put
Mia on his lap when she was 3, and she's
been interested in drums ever since.
"I remember hearing Sydney sing
what fascinated her in The Little
Mermaid when she was 3, and I couldn't
believe she had memorized the lyrics so
well and was able to keep the pitch"
The girls, before they reached their
teens, were performing in local clubs
and festivals as they launched their
band, which includes Chase Chappell
on lead guitar, Andrew Schachinger on
keyboards and Randy Martin on bass.
They connected with the guitarist
through a newspaper ad and the other
two through people they know.
Among their favorite shows have
been opening for the Temptations and
the Four Tops in a celebration of the
50th anniversary of Motown at the DTE

They also have worked at Virginia's
Busch Gardens and Wisconsin's
Summerfest, being recognized as the best
new artists among 700 entrants in 2010.
Both sisters, who have studied with
private teachers, practice at their mom's
home three times a week.
"My favorite drummer is Meg White,
who has worked with the White Stripes
and sets a good example for women
who like this instrument" Mia says. "I
like the drums because the sound is so
powerful and makes a big impact.
"My sister's favorite singer is Hayley
Williams of Paramore. Sydney likes her
strong rock vocals:'
Mia, whose favorite subject is English,
says the two are very disciplined about
completing their homework before they
begin rehearsing their music or hanging
out with friends. She believes that disci-
pline has made them more mature and
able to get along well.
The band, which will appear June 21
during a party at the Motor City Casino
Sound Board, performs all original
music composed by Sydney and her dad
working at guitar or piano.
"Sing It" recalls a time in middle
school when Sydney stood up to bully-
ing. The song was recorded in Atlanta
with veteran producer Johnny Andrews.
The upcoming video was made possible
with the help of Richard Mandell and AJ
Ahmad of Exxodus Pictures, which will
be using a Schmier song in an indie film.
"I've learned how to stand up for
myself' Sydney says. "That will be
important as Mia and I continue our
careers while studying music in college.
We want to keep promoting our band
tours:'
