Organizer Gary Klinger, athletic chair for the B'nai B'rith Great Lakes Region, said enough golfers have signed up to get the league started Thursday, April 18, but he's hoping for more. "Twelve people have committed:' he said. "I expect we'll have more than that because there's a lot of interest. There's room for 28 golfers. My goal is to have 16-20:' Klinger said he sent out a blast email last week to about 700 B'nai B'rith members, hoping to generate more buzz about the league. Golfers will play on Thursdays for 16 weeks at Fox Hills Golf and Banquet Center in Plymouth. Tee times for the nine-hole rounds will start at 5:10 p.m. Two-man teams will face each other, playing in a foursome. The lowest score will win. Each golfer will have a handi- cap, which will be determined during the first two weeks of play. Competition will start the third week. "Handicaps can change from week to week:' said Klinger, who is considering breaking the season into two halves and looking for prizes that will be awarded during and at the end of the season. Cost is $21 per person per week, not including golf cart rental. The first week is free. "That's not a huge amount of money:' Klinger said. "Fox Hills is a good course, and it's only about a half-hour from the West Bloomfield-Farmington Hills area:' Golfers interested in joining the league should contact Klinger at (248) 229-1816 or gkslurpee@gmail.com . B'nai B'rith membership is mandatory to play. In other B'nai B'rith sports news: Downtown Fox (7-1) led the way with one week left in the regular season in the basketball league. Pisgah-Zeiger (6-2), Brotherhood (2-6) and Great Lakes Region (1-7) followed the leader. Semifinals and championship game will be played Sunday, April 21, at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield. Downtown Fox will face Great Lakes Region and Pisgah-Zeiger will battle Brotherhood in the semifinals, with the winners playing for the title. The softball league will get under way on either Sunday, May 12 or 19, at Drake Sports Park in West Bloomfield. Teams are still welcome. Contact Gary Klinger (see above). Walk On To Star Four years ago, Marni Weinstein earned a spot on the Grand Valley State University women's golf team as a walk-on. Coach Rebecca Mailloux saw something in the former Walled Lake Western High School standout during tryouts that convinced her that Weinstein had the potential to help the Marni team. Weinstein is now Weinstein a senior and a team leader both on and off the golf course. She's the only active senior on the Grand Valley roster because the other senior is injured. She's dropped her stroke average from 84.3 as a sophomore to 81.86 as a junior and 80.46 this season. She was named to the All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Second Team last year. "Coming on as a walk-on, I've always felt that I had to prove myself; Weinstein told Grand Valley Lantern student newspaper reporter Bryce Derouin. "Being where I am now, I feel I have proven myself" - Hall Doors Open The big day is drawing closer for Farmington Hills resident Richard Bernstein, who will be inducted into the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in Commack, N.Y., on Sunday, April 21. Blind since birth, Bernstein has com- pleted 17 marathons. One was during an Ironman competi- tion in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, where he did a 2.4-mile swim, 112- Richard mile bicycle ride and Bernstein 26.2-mile marathon with the help of a guide in 14 hours and 36 minutes. The other 2013 Hall of Fame inductees are weightlifter David Berger, one of 11 Israeli Olympians killed by Palestinian terrorists at the 1972 Munich Olympics; gymnast Aly Raisman; basketball player Steve Bilsky; boxer Boyd Melson; and lacrosse player Bruce Cohen. ❑ Send news to sports®thejewishnews.com.
