gifts. Phyllis Herzig, JFS president,
explained that "individual giving
allows us the flexibility to provide
services that are under-funded from
public or community sources:'
JFS is the only resettlement agency
for all of Washtenaw County. In 2012,
JFS resettled 52 people through HIAS,
a national organization that facili-
tates refugee resettlement/entrance
to the U.S. JFS resettlement services
include housing assistance, referrals
and employment counseling for indi-
viduals with a variety of immigration
visas and backgrounds. JFS also con-
tinues to work with about 15 people
who arrived over the last couple of
years to provide referrals, answer
questions and be a general source of
support post-resettlement.
The community also relies heav-
ily on JFS for older adult services,
such as transportation and accom-
paniment to medical appointments,
access to its food pantry and friendly
visitors for those isolated or without
caregivers.
"What impresses me:" Lauffer said,
"is the extent to which recipients of
JFS services have also become volun-
teers and donors."
Since 2003, JFS has awarded the
annual Claire and Isadore Bernstein
Leadership Award to persons or
organizations demonstrating superior
community leadership. This year, in
addition to Abramzon, awards go to:
• Jewish Federation of Greater Ann
Arbor: For its forethought and guid-
ance to establish the agency and its
ongoing support of JFS.
• Bank of Ann Arbor: For its lead-
ership among community businesses
and its enthusiastic support of JFS
over the years.
• JFS employees Elina Zilberberg,
associate director, and Andre
Yastchenko, director of International
and Transportation Services, also will
receive special awards for 15 years of
dedicated service to the agency.
"Constellation JFS" will be from
4-6 p.m. Sunday, April 21, at the
U-M North Campus Research
Complex. Music by SwanSong
Musical Productions, the songs
of Zach Barnes, and a wine, hors
d'oeuvres and dessert reception will
be included.
Tickets are $100 per person. For
more information or to purchase
tickets, contact Cindy Klein at (734)
