communities involved include Oak
Park, Romulus and Harper Woods.
Participation has jumped from four
schools to about 20 and from 40 stu-
dents to nearly 300.
"I spend a fair amount of my
weekends down in Detroit; Lawson
admits. "I work with coaches and do
some fundraising:"
The league has five tournaments a
year and then has an elimination com-
petition to find the best team to send
to a national Urban Debate League
tournament. This year's national quali-
fying championship and city champi-
onship tournament was March 15-16.
The lure of debate and the desire to
give back to the community has drawn
a number of Lawson's former students
to help out in the debate league. They
include Jonathan Frank, a 1978 gradu-

ate of Southfield-Lathrup. Frank, 51,
a lawyer who lives in Bloomfield
Township, says debate has helped him
in his career and he sees unique ben-
efits for Detroit students.
"Debate had a tremendous impact
on my high school years and after,
even in my law school classes at U-M:'
says Frank. "It's a great activity and
(through the Urban League) we're able
to bring the activity to Detroit.
"Debate will help students in ways
their schools normally wouldn't be
able to:' he adds. "The idea of stand-
ing up and presenting yourself and
having the confidence to do that is
something the students aren't going to
be able to learn on their own.
"These kids, down the road, will
be able to go places that other kids in
Detroit won't be able to:'
