A New Life W hen Ruth Ann and Kyle Logue of Ann Arbor first met Feleke Kumbi, the left side of the 11-year-old's face and neck were swollen from Hodgkin's disease. A native of Ethiopia, he spoke Amharic and Oromo, but no English. They had to speak with him through interpreters as they shepherded him through radiation treatments with Dr. Jeffrey Forman. That was a year ago. Today, Feleke is cancer-free, speaks English fluently, and the Logues are his legal guardians. Now 12 and with an F1 student visa that allows him to remain in the United States, he attends Christian Montessori School, where he enjoys math and soc- cer and dreams of one day becoming an engineer or a doctor. "We first saw his story on Facebook," Ruth Ann Logue says. "He needed a family where he could stay six weeks while he was treated for cancer:' A few weeks after Feleke came to the Logues' home, family friend Steve Weinberg of the Jewish Distribution Ruth Ann Logue, Feleke and Dr. Jeffrey Forman Committee embarked on a trip to Ethiopia. He was able to go to Feleke's remote village and meet with his par- ents, armed with photos of Feleke swimming, playing basketball and rid- ing a bike, and with an iPad featuring a video from Feleke telling of his new life in the U.S. Feleke is the youngest of 11 siblings. His close-knit family had been unable to pay for his medical treatment. They feared that if he were to come back to Ethiopia and get sick again, they would be unable to help him. "Please keep him for as long as you can and raise him as your own," they said in a video message to the Logues. Ruth Ann and Kyle talked with their five children, who all saw Feleke's place in their family as Divine providence. They shared his parents' message with Feleke, who responded "incredibly mature for his age," Ruth Ann says. "He said it was the best place for him here, and we would be his mom and dad here, while he would keep his family in Ethiopia:' Before the Logues made it legal, they, their 16-year-old son, Thomas, and Feleke made a trip to Ethiopia so he could see his family again. Feleke enjoyed the visit and returned home to Ann Arbor with the Logues. "I like it here because they're nice," Feleke says. "They're my mom and dad here, and I feel the same way about them as I do my family in Ethiopia:' Feleke gets checkups every three months to ensure the cancer hasn't returned. "He's doing well:' Ruth Ann says. "He plays soccer, basketball, Frisbee, loves all things electronic ... he's a very curi- ous child." ❑ Does your child have Psoriasis?
