he early-morning fog had lifted, reveal-
ing one of those gray, damp March days in
Michigan where the chill penetrates wool
and cotton and is ultimately absorbed by bone. Cars,
with their defroster fans blasting into the windshields
and faces of their drivers, were spilling onto Lafayette,
Beaubien, St. Antoine and Randolph from an array
of parking lots and garages. It was quitting time in
Downtown Detroit.
