The Brits Are Coming
Starting on Sunday, March 31, at 9
(1) p.m. is the PBS Masterpiece eight-
part series Mr. Selfridge, airing
through May 19.
It's about the real-life Harry Gordon
Selfridge (1856-1947), who grew up in
Jackson, Mich. His father, a general
store owner, deserted his family after
the Civil War. But Selfridge's school-
teacher mother managed to hold things
together.
Selfridge only had a grade-school
education, but he had a lot of talent,
luck and pluck; by the 1890s, he was
a top Marshall Field department store

executive. In 1906, Selfridge visited
England and was struck by the poor
quality of British retailing. He decided
to open a top-tier department store in
the U.K. The first store (1909) was an
enormous success, and the department
store chain Selfridges, also known as
Selfridge & Co., prospered for decades.
Jeremy Piven, 47, stars in the title
role. There are similarities between
the hyped-up Jewish
talent agent Piven
played on HBO's
Entourage and the
larger-than-life
Selfridge.
Airing at 9 p.m.
Wednesdays, April
3 and 10, is the two-
Piven
part BBC America
miniseries Spies of
Warsaw, from the
novel of the same
name by acclaimed
historical spy-fiction
writer Alan Furst, 71.
The series fol-

lows Col. Jean-
Francois Mercier
(David Tennant), a WWI hero who, in
the years leading up to World War II,
is drawn into a world of abduction,
betrayal and intrigue in the diplomatic
salons and back alleys of Warsaw. Of
course, he has a torrid and sometimes
dangerous romance along the way.
Mercier's bohemian sister has a
Jewish jazz-pianist boyfriend, and
Mercier takes under his protection
two Soviet Jews who have defected
from working for the Soviets (one
is played by English actor Allan
Corduner, 62).
Short Takes
Spring Breakers, a raunchy com-
edy directed and written by indie
film favorite Harmony Korine, 40,
received national media raves when
it opened in New York City on March
15. It opened in the Detroit area last
week and is worth catching.
