Yom HaShoah Day At HMC

T

he Holocaust Memorial
Center Zekelman Family
Campus is hosting its
citywide annual Yom HaShoah
Commemoration Day on Sunday,
April 7. The HMC is located at 28123
Orchard Lake Road in Farmington
Hills.
Events will begin at noon with the
project "Unto Every Person There Is
A Name." Volunteers from both the
Great Lakes Region B'nai B'rith and
the Holocaust Memorial Center will
share the reading aloud of the names
of some of those whose lives were
taken in the Holocaust.
The formal program starts at 1
p.m. with the Posting of the Colors by
members of the Jewish War Veterans.
An original Kaddish as a respon-
sive reading led by HMC Executive
Director Stephen M. Goldman and
the traditional candle lighting led by
Holocaust survivor Michael Weiss
of Oak Park, a member of Shaarit
Haplaytah, follows. HMC past presi-
dent Alan Zekelman will serve as
master of ceremonies.
Cantor Leonard Gutman of
Congregation Shaarey Zedek in
Southfield will lead guests in the
singing of "Hatikvah." Gutman also
will chant the "El Malei Rachamim"
before being joined by pianist Martin
Mandelbaum for several other
musical selections, including "The

Shoah Requiem Concert
To Be On Live TV
The world premiere of I Believe — A
Shoah Requiem, the first complete musi-
cal liturgy dedicated to Yom HaShoah,
will be broadcast live at 4 p.m. from
Detroit's Orchestra Hall by Detroit
Public Television. The community-wide
interfaith Holocaust Remembrance Day
observance can be viewed on WTVS
Channel 56.1, or via a live webcast at
dptv.org.
While limited seats remain for
Holocaust survivors, I Believe, com-
posed by Cantor Daniel Gross of Adat
Shalom Synagogue, has sold out all
2,200 seats in Orchestra Hall, even prior
to any formal publicity.

State's Holocaust Event
April 11 In Lansing
The Michigan Jewish Conference, in
cooperation with the office of Gov. Rick
Snyder, will host the official State of
Michigan Holocaust Commemoration
noon Thursday, April 11, in the State
Capitol Building rotunda in Lansing.
The theme of this year's com-
memoration is "The Importance of
Remembering:' Snyder, state legislators

Partisan Song; "L'Dor Vador" and
"Ani Ma'amin."
HMC President Gary Karp will
deliver opening remarks and wel-
come the attendees along with Dr.
Rene Lichtman, on behalf of the
Hidden Children and Child Survivors
Association of Michigan, and Dr.
Charles Silow, on behalf of CHAIM
-Children of Holocaust-survivors
Association of Michigan.
Shari Ferber Kaufman will share
her thoughts and her reflections on
this Yom Hashoah.
All who wish to kindle personal
yahrtzeit candles are invited to do so
following the program.
Complimentary valet parking will
be available beginning at 12:15 and
admission will be waived for that day.
Additionally, live streaming of I
Believe — A Shoah Requiem from
Orchestra Hall in Detroit begins at 4
p.m.
This year's event is supported by

To Install New Board
StandWithUs-Michigan has elected its
executive board for the 2013-2014 year,
with Barbara Moretsky as president.
Celia Livermore will be vice presi-
dent, Julie Borim the recording secre-
tary, Sheldon Blair the treasurer and Ed
Kohl the corresponding secretary.
The general board will be installed at
the April 11 board meeting at the Jewish
Community Center in West Bloomfield.

Full Week Of Events
From Federation Women
For one week, April 8-14, the Jewish
Federation is hosting a series of events,
Federation Days, powered by Women's
Department and open to all who want
to take part in fun and interactive pro-
gramming while making a difference for
the community.
Here is just a sampling of the events
that will be offered throughout the
week: Torah on Tap — Women's Edition
with Rabbi Leiby Burnham, a family-
friendly afternoon at the Robot Garage,
a bus tour of Detroit, lectures, a tasting
tour in Eastern Market, a hands-on
cooking class and more!
Federation Days culminates in Stretch
to Help, a community-wide day of
health and wellness classes on Sunday,
April 14.
Events are open to everyone with a
minimum pledge of $18 to Federation's
2013 Annual Campaign. If you have
already pledged for 2013, you are eli-
gible to attend and no additional pledge
is required.

support Federation's 2013 Annual
Campaign, which funds a number of
local and international agencies to
address of the needs of Jewish people
in Metropolitan Detroit, in Israel and
around the world.

Yad Ezra To Hold
'Vanish Hunger' Fundraiser
Yad Ezra, Michigan's only kosher food
pantry, will host its second annual
"Vanish Hunger" fundraiser at 7 p.m.
Thursday, April 18, at the City Theatre,
inside Hockeytown Cafe in Detroit.
The world-famous magician Shimshi,
direct from the Wynn/Encore Las Vegas,
is back for a second year with a new
show and new tricks to help Vanish
Hunger in Metro Detroit.
"Fighting hunger in our community
is a constant struggle said Lea Luger,
Yad Ezra executive director. "We hope
the community will join us for Vanish
Hunger in an effort to help those in
need. Last year's event was able to help
assist more than 1,400 families and
3,200 individuals. The event is a great
way for people to lend a hand and learn
about our mission in a fun and unique
way:'
Co-chairpersons for this year's event
are Nancy Kleinfeldt, Suzanne Jacoby
and Amy Schlussel.
Vanish Hunger will feature a silent
auction, light food and spirits. Business
