Art In Action
"The Colors of Kindness" will work
like this:
The crowds arrive.
Inside, hundreds of chairs will
be set up in Prentis Hall. "On the
left front side of the room a big
white canvas will be stretched over
a stand:' Herzig says "A table will
hold paint containers with many
different colors and brushes.
"The right front side of the room
will have a keyboard, a mic and a
fancy sound system. In the back
of the room, there will be refresh-
ments, simple finger foods such
as peanut-butter filled pretzels,
tangerines, cookies and different
sodas:"
As they enter the building, guests
receive a number. When Cascardo
has completed the mural's outlines,
numbers will be called in order,
with four to five working at a time.
Every artist may choose which part
of the mural he/she would like to
complete.
"When there is no more white to
be seen, the artist will take the can-
vas home and give it the finishing
touches:' Herzig says.
No talent?
No problem.
"There is always someone who
says that they do not have any artis-
tic skills, and I tell them that there
are no mistakes because I have final
edit:' Cascardo says. "I tell them to
just have fun, try painting a small
area with one color, and before long
those same people are the last to
put their brushes down.
"This new art form has opened
up a dialogue between my art and
the people who are engaged and
inspired in the process. It is not
a one-sided conversation. I have
many stories of how this program
has affected people in a very posi-
tive way:'
The JCC is at 15110 W. 10
Mile Road in Oak Park. The sug-
gested donation for "The Colors of
Kindness" is $3 a person ($1 mini-
mum). For information, visit www.
