Keep Young Adults
Here With Jobs
My wife and I were lucky enough to be
present for the first hour of the EPIC
Event. It was amazingly well-intended
and an uplifting experience to see the
talented, beautiful young attendees
gather for this community event.
These are the future leaders and the
builders of Detroit 2020. NEXTGen
Detroit and its leadership team have
raised the bar in our community. We
need to support them.
I know that some people have moved
back to Detroit because they found jobs.
I know a few who are looking to change
their positions, and they told me that
they have some friends willing to move
back as soon as they can land a good
position. Our community benefits by
this talent coming back and staying.
This note is meant to be a reminder
to those employers out there who are
in need of talent. We also encourage
local business people and organizations
to engage a college student intern this
summer. For more info, go to: www.
csinternships.org. ("Matching Students
With Internships!' March 14, page 23).
These young people are all capable of
new technology and want to know that
opportunities exist right in their own
backyard.
I left the EPIC Event feeling good and
felt compelled to send a message out to
the community. It's incumbent on each
of us to retain, upgrade and find jobs in
our community so we retain and recruit
back all of this talent.

JN Is Off-Base In
Criticism Of NRA
Let's make one thing clear, "I am not
now, nor have I ever, been a member of
the NRA." Nevertheless, I was puzzled
and shocked by the vicious and mis-
leading editorial attacking the NRA in
the Jewish News ("NRA Is Now On The
Fringe March 14, page 45).
For example, the editorial slyly
insinuates that the NRA is anti-Semitic
by quoting Nathan Gutman who said
the NRAs "Enemies List" is "laced" with
Jews. I don't know exactly what "laced"
means — could it be that there is a dis-
proportionate number of Jews that are
influential members of leftist and pro-
gressive groups who push for disarming
citizens and who vehemently attack
those opposing their agenda?
Shame on the editor for engaging in
insinuations. Speaking of anti-Semitism,

where were the JN and its editor when it
was revealed that Hagel talked about the
influence of the "Jewish Lobby," his links
to an Iranian lobby and his statement
that Israel is on its way to becoming an
apartheid state [Washington Post]?
And should the JN not have investi-
gated Secretary of State John Brennan
who said in 2008 that the president
must "encourage greater assimilation
of Hezbollah into Lebanon's political
system!'
It seems to me that if the JN had the
interest of the Jewish community and
Israel at heart it would have thoroughly
investigated and covered not only the
nominations of Hagel and Brennan but
other important national policy issues,
rather than publishing a tirade on the
NRA.
Over the last few years, the JN has
been far from balanced and unbiased in
its articles and editorials dealing with
national and local politics affecting our
Jewish community and Israel.

NRA Does Excellent Job
Defending My Rights
I would like to respond to your editorial
criticizing the NRA.
You claim that "universal background
checks" are sensible and popular. What
is popular is not always right, and uni-
versal background checks may not have
the intended consequences.
For example, under Sen. Charles
Schumer's recently proposed bill to
institute a background check on pri-
vate firearms sales, it would be nearly
impossible for a father to teach his child
how to shoot because the father could
not legally "transfer" the gun.
The criminal black marketers of sto-
len and smuggled guns don't care much
about background checks. Universal
background checks will mostly inconve-
nience law-abiding gun buyers and may
even cost some lives by blocking quick
purchases of guns by people in immi-
nent danger of attack, such as victims of
stalking.
I am a member of the NRA, and it
does an excellent job defending my
Second Amendment rights. You say
that it is possible to be pro-Second
Amendment and against the NRA, but
that is not effective. With 4.5 million
members (and growing), the NRA is
the largest gun-rights (and indeed the
largest civil rights advocacy) group in
the U.S. It dwarfs the ACLU (500,000
members), which has no interest in the

Second Amendment. The NRA, due to
sheer size, is the best choice.
As for the "enemies list!' each organi-
zation has a duty to inform its members
about the opposition. It isn't the NRAs
fault that so many Jewish institutions
are anti-gun, and, as a member, I want
to know so I can focus my charitable
dollars elsewhere. Organizations such
as B'nai B'rith and ADL should tend to
their immediate missions instead of get-
ting involved in the gun control debate.
In the Book of Esther, the Jews
attacked Haman's forces. In tractate
Sanhedrin 72a, "If someone comes to
kill you, rise up and kill him first." In
Exodus 22:2, "If a thief be found break-
ing up, and be smitten that he die, there
shall be no blood shed for him." There is
clearly an ancient tradition in Judaism
regarding the right to self defense. We
should uphold it.
