"Much-heralded Star Deli slow-cooks it's own tender temptations" — Danny Raskin ,2012 Big Sean and eventually brought Jim Burnstein in to do a cameo role. "I kept calling Jim to work with us, and he finally said he would let us handle his most beloved script, Love and Honor, remotely based on the expe- rience of a friend" Rubin explains. "He said we would have to work with a producer, Chip Diggins, who already was involved with the project. A year and a half later, we put the film together. We had casting directors in Los Angeles and Michigan. In the process, I learned so much from Chip" Diggins, managing partner of Route One Films, has worked in Hollywood for 20 years. He has held executive posi- tions at Disney and Paramount Pictures. "I think I've done everything I could to jumpstart my career, from intern- ing with Edward Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz in Los Angeles to working on films to starting my own company" says Rubin, whose production credits include Mooz-lum, starring Danny Glover. "I am constantly traveling between Michigan and California. Our agent, in California, had reached out to us after seeing our work with Liam, his client" Rubin has had lots of encouragement from his mom, Edythe Rubin, a social worker for Head Start in Detroit, and his fiancee, Michelle Unger, soon to receive her law degree from Wayne State University. The wedding will take place in September at Temple Beth El, where Rabbi Elliot Pachter of B'nai Moshe will co-officiate with Rabbi Daniel Syme. "Right now, I am immersed in the release of the film Love and Honor, but we are working very hard at develop- ing new projects" says Rubin, whose brother, Evan, is a programmer in Japan and whose sister, Anna, is a freshman at Michigan State University. "I'm young and hungry with a foot in the door of filmmaking. I want to continue to learn as we work on new projects. I enjoy films so much that watching new productions often fills my time away from Deep Blue Pictures" Rubin also enjoys hanging out with friends, reading and being in the audi- ence of plays and concerts. "Love and Honor is a testament that hard work can pay off," he says. "I speak to classes at U-M and tell them never to be afraid of rejection. They just have to keep going. "I think of film as a way to reach out to millions of individuals at once, get- ting a message across and entertaining them. Movies are such a part of our cul- ture, and culture affects the subjects of movies. It's all cyclical." ❑ Love and Honor opens Friday, March 29, at Emagine Novi, 44425 W.12 Mile. $5-$10. Naked in Encino had its world pre- miere in Denver last December and won four Marlowe Awards. "I spent time as a child around Jackson," Kout recalls about her his- tory in Michigan. "My grandfather, Benjamin Kout, had a farm close to Saugatuck, where I spent a little time before he made aliyah to Israel at the age of 84. "I was very excited that Dorfman in Love was invited to the Saugatuck Waterfront Film Festival and that I got to return to the state in 2012. "I would like to express gratitude to all people who support independent film and festivals. It's how filmmakers find distributors. This is the way our stories continue to be told:' Kout, who lives in the San Fernando Valley in California, also spent part of her younger years living in Florida, where her parents took her to temple every Friday and prompted her responses to ideas raised through their rabbi's sermons. She considers that important to her development as a writer. "I write universal themes, but they begin with my being a Jewish woman:' says Kout, who enjoys meeting new people and traveling. "Dorfman in Love began as a mini-miracle for me because I had given up writing screen- plays. "This is not about whether Deb chooses a Jewish man. From learn- ing to love herself, she can choose a mentsh. I don't believe you have to be Jewish to be a mentsh. "I'm enjoying being re-energized into screenwriting and also being a playwright. Who knows what's next? Maybe I'll try haiku" ❑ Metro Detroiters can watch Dorfman in Love on DirectIV With ally ‘arrpout order of $29.95 or more with this capon Limited time offer. Exp.
