For eighth-graders enrolled in Temple Israel's Tyner Religious School, putting Jewish values into action means getting to know the residents of Jewish Senior Life (JSL). All through February, students met with residents of Fleischman Residence/ Blumberg Plaza and Hechtman Apartments in West Bloomfield. First, it was a get-to-know-you session and Bingo game, said Mary Blowers, JSL program coordinator at Fleischman. Residents and students also enjoyed a performance by musician Avy Schreiber and will do an art project together in March, she said. Carol Rosenberg, JSL Foundation director, spoke to the students at the first session about the art of Jewish caregiving and the "theory on aging" to prepare them for their experience with older adults. Interacting with JSL residents is an important part of the school's curricu- lum, which is based on empathy, action and "learning about people who are different from us," says Rabbi Jennifer Temple Israel student Kelsey Olson meets with resident Sarah Kreisman. Kaluzny, Temple Israel's eighth-grade teacher. "This gives students an up-close and personal opportunity to learn about their place in the world as well as oth- ers," Kaluzny said. "Getting older is a universal experience, and it's important for students to learn what it means:' Appreciating this generation is par- ticularly important, Kaluzny added. "There's a reason why they are called the 'Greatest Generation,"' Kaluzny said. "To be able to learn from those older adults who survived the Holocaust and those who really built the foundation for our community and our Jewish world is an experience students will have forever:' The program is well attended and facilitates ongoing intergenerational friendships, Kaluzny said. "Students run to find the person they're paired up with. If they're not there, they worry about them," she said. The residents enjoy it, too, said Blowers. "That visit gave us so much pleasure said Hechtman resident Rose Breitberg. "The students were really interested in us, plus they got excited when we were close to winning at Bingo:' ❑ Allison Batdorff works for Your People LLC. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • gi • • • • • • • • • • -7' • 47$ 116 • • • APRIL 15, 2013 YOUR $54 TICKET INCLUDES: 7 P.M.
