Walton raised his voice several times dur- ing an impassioned closing argu- ment: "Look through the eyes of a 74-year-old woman ... what did it look like when Jonathan Hoffman was screaming for help ... when she goes into the bedroom and fires the gun a third time ... what did it look like as he crawls up the stairs and she shoots again and again and again ... what does that look like ... that looks like murder:' In addition to Fred and Sandra Layne, other witnesses included experts in forensics, ballistics and bloodstain pattern evidence, several members of the West Bloomfield Police Department, two of Hoffman's friends, the hospital nurse who examined Layne after the shooting and Hoffman's proba- tion officer. Hoffman was shot six times; two of the bullets were recovered from his body while the others went through him and were found elsewhere in the house. Ten empty shell casings were found. Large amounts of blood were found in the loft, on the wall of the stairwell, and in the kitchen and master bedroom on the main floor, along with a trail of bloody foot- prints belonging to Layne in the basement. Sabbota said there is no way for the experts to determine what hap- pened; where each shot was fired or who chased whom down the stairs and throughout the house. Michael and Jennifer Hoffman, Jonathan's parents, and Michael's sister, Judy Metzger, who had been sequestered during the trial because they were potential wit- nesses, were in the courtroom during closing arguments. Other relatives on both sides of the family were present throughout. "It was a terrible ordeal, listen- ing to what the prosecution and the defense attorney described:' said paternal grandmother Phyllis Krause. Michael Hoffman said he com- mended his son for the presence of mind and bravery he showed by managing to call 911. "Jon enriched the lives of those he touched:' said Hoffman. "I was and continue to be very proud of him and of the great young man he was sure to become:' ❑ Nothing defines the best of Michigan's summer like sun bathing, a nice dip, great food, and wonderful people all in a single relaxing environment at Tam-O-Shanter Country Club. 11111111 — ;T 'MT • f. ti l • rrtorithl membershi 30 AGE & Under dues 31-35 36-40 41+ SOCIAL MEMBERSHIP $155 $185 $235 $320 GOLF $235 $335 $435 $785 MEMBERSHIP To Schedule a Private Tour of Our Facility Contac Bashar Tobia at 248.855.1900 Ext. 408 18 Hole Championship Golf Course Updated Ladies Locker Room Newly Renovated Clubhouse Updated Pool Facilities Updated Fitness Center Fine & Casual Dining Clay Tennis Courts _ c' 248.855.1900 w .tarnoshantercc.org- 5051 Orchard Lake Road West Bloomfield, M 48323 JN March 21 • 2013 21
