The joint effort of the not-for-profit Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation and Friendship Circle scheduled for Sunday, March 17, in the Meer Family Friendship Center in West Bloomfield was postponed by organizers because not enough players registered. "We only had a handful of players sign up. We were hoping to get around 40 to make it a good experience for the competitors:' said Sari Cicurel, the foundation's community relations direc- tor. "We didn't have the number we need- ed for a first effort:' she said. "We think the date was too close to Passover, and we probably need to open the event to high school-age players. Perhaps we put it together too quickly." The tournament was set up for play- ers age 30 and older. No new date has been set, Cicurel said, but she hopes the tournament can be held sometime this calendar year. "The foundation and Friendship Circle are a wonderful partnership:' she said. "We just need to do some tweak- ing with the tournament to get it going" Cost to play was $100 and sponsor- ships were available. Proceeds from the tournament were earmarked to benefit the children's charities supported by the foundation and Friendship Circle, which provides programs and support for the families of individuals with special needs. Down On The Farm Now that the Detroit Tigers have begun playing spring training games in Florida, the real major league baseball season isn't too far away. There aren't any Jewish players on the Tigers' roster, but there's one lurking in the minor leagues hoping to get to the big leagues someday. Outfielder Ben Guez has spent five years in the Tigers' minor league sys- tem. He was with the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens for portions of the past two seasons. He hit .278 with three homers and 32 RBIs in 95 games with the Mud Hens in 2011. Last year, he hit .284 with six homers and 37 RBIs in 82 games with Toledo. Guez was selected by the Tigers in the 19th round of the 2008 draft after playing collegiate baseball at William & Mary. ❑ Please send sports news to sports@thejewishnews.com.
