Valerie R. Newman,
assistant state
defender, was named
one of Lawyers USA's
Lawyers of the Year.
She won the honor
for her work on the
Lafler v. Cooper
Newman
case, regarding a
defendant receiving poor legal advice
resulting in the rejection of a plea deal
offer. The court battle landed in front
of the Supreme Court of the United
States; Newman won with a 5-4 deci-
sion, with the case hailed as one of the
most important of its time.
