Pesach

Pesach comes at a time when young-
er wines from the previous year's
harvest are sent around the world.
Fresh, young wines make the per-
fect accompaniment to Seder night
given their light to medium body,
which makes them easier to drink.
Following a successful harvest in
2012, there are a number of interest-
ing new wines being launched in
time for the festivities.

Yarden Sauvignon Blanc 2012

is a wine that displays a powerful
elegance and an unmistakable fresh-
ness. This is a deep-flavored wine
with an inviting tropical aroma.
A cool fermentation period fol-
lowed by a short aging in French
oak barrels give it a medium body
and notes of oak and vanilla, which
add another dimension to this deli-
ciously complex wine. This wine will
go perfectly with either a dairy or
poultry-based meal.

Golan Moscato 2012 was the first
wine to be produced from the most
recent harvest. For those looking
for a slightly sweeter wine to end
the Seder, the Golan Moscato is the
perfect choice. Given its somewhat
sparkling nature, it makes for a
pleasant, easy-to-drink wine.

Galil Mountain Mon 2009: Pesach

Facing page

Mount Hermon Red 2012 displays
strong notes of ripe red and black
fruits, alongside hints of fresh herbs.
Delightfully drinkable, Mount
Hermon Red has good body and
wonderful flavor. It is a very versatile
wine and complements a range of
dishes.

wines are delicious served throughout
the festival.
Sweet wine was one of the three
types of wines drunk in ancient Egypt.
A varietal of the sweet Muscat grape,
the Muscat of Alexandria is so called
because of its association with ancient
Egypt. The Muscat of Alexandria grape
is still grown in Israel to this day, and
the Yarden Muscat, a delicious des-
sert wine, is made entirely from this
varietal.
Moving to ancient Israel, the grape
species currently cultivated in Israel
are considered to be of the same spe-
cies originally grown in the land. To
truly experience a wine that fully tells
the story of its place of origin, turn
to the superior quality single vine-
yard wines produced in Israel. Single
vineyard wines would have been most
commonplace in ancient Israel as the
winepress was generally located near,
or within, the individual vineyards,
avoiding the unnecessary transporta-
tion of ripe fruit.
There are some excellent Israeli
single vintage wines that have received
international acclaim. Two such
award-winning wines are the Carmel
Kayoumi Shiraz (2006), which won a
Decanter Award in London, and the

2013 also sees the release of a number
of aged wines, which will add another
dimension to your wine selection on
Seder night. The 2009 Alon has been
scoring highly at international wine
tastings and is a full-bodied wine with
well-balanced flavors and a pleasant,
long-lasting finish. It is a deliciously
unusual blend that flew off the shelves
when it was released in Israel.

Yarden Chardonnay Odem
(2009), which won the
Vinitaly Grand Gold Medal
for its superior quality.
Both vineyards are locat-
ed in northern Israel on
the foothills of Mount
Meron and Mount
Hermon, respectively.
This Passover,
to return to the
wine of the ancient
Middle East, the
fourth cup of wine
can contain some
spicy additions. The
Talmud lists more
than 60 types of
wine produced in
ancient Israel includ-
ing spiced, cooked
and diluted wines.
Ancient Egyptian wine Yarden
was discovered to have Chardonnay
Odem
also been sweetened
by adding fruits and
honeys. Spicing a
young, fruity red wine, such as the
Mount Hermon Red, and heating with
a little sugar and lemon will produce
an unusual end to the most traditional
of Jewish festivities.
