According to West Bloomfield
Detective Brad Boulet, 10 shots were
fired from Layne's Glock 17 hand-
gun. Hoffman sustained six gunshot
wounds, including a graze wound to
his back.
Ten casings and nine bullets were
recovered; two of the bullets were
removed from Hoffman's body dur-
ing the autopsy. The others were
found in various places throughout
the house. The tenth bullet, which
traveled through the upstairs bath-
room wall and hit a tree on the prop-
erty of next-door neighbor, Gary
Berger, was not found. Berger called
911 after he heard shots coming
from the Layne residence.
Two of Hoffman's friends, Max
Dashevsky of West Bloomfield
and Adam Makhoul of Bloomfield
Hills, testified they had been with
Hoffman the night before he was
killed, and that he had admitted to
smoking Spice earlier that evening.
The following day, Hoffman told
them he had tested positive for Spice
and was afraid he would be sent to
jail for violating the terms of his pro-
bation, which prohibited the use of
illegal drugs.
Toxicology studies performed
during the autopsy showed the pres-
ence of synthetic cannabinoids, such
as Spice or K2 might produce, in
Hoffman's urine but not in his blood.
Dr. Gary Kunsman, chief forensic
toxicologist for the Oakland County
Medical Examiner's office, said this
meant the drug had already been
metabolized and that Hoffman was
not "under the influence" at the time
of the shooting.
Sabbota questioned the reliability
of the autopsy report, which was
amended twice — in August 2012,
and again in February 2013 — after
errors were found in the original
report filed in June 2012.
Dragovic acknowledged some mis-
takes had been made regarding some
of the bullet tracks, but maintained
the gist of the report had remained
consistent.
Jonathan Hoffman's uncle, Marc
Metzger of Farmington Hills, told
the Jewish News the family would
like to start a technology and com-
puter fund in Jonathan's honor to
help kids who cannot afford their
own. His wife, Judy, is the sister of
Jonathan's father, Michael Hoffman.
"Jon had such a passion for it
[technology]:' said Metzger. "That's
what he would have wanted"
The case is being heard by
Oakland County Circuit Judge
Denise Langford Morris, who
anticipates closing arguments will be
heard next week.
