and that worked out. I spoke to Dr.
Robert Martin, their artistic director,
about being part of I Believe, and he
said they would be honored to be the
core choir:'
Martin, assistant superintendent of
instruction for the West Bloomfield
Schools, was impressed with the emo-
tion and power behind the words and
sounds of the cantata.
"As a chorus, we're committed to
multi-ethnic music:' says Martin, who
suggested that the West Bloomfield High
School Chamber Choir be included.
"I've met children of survivors and
found it so poignant to hear them talk
about their experiences, and I believe
that the public will be moved by this
program:'
Gross, whose career launched in
opera, reached out to colleagues and
additional choirs, including cantorial
soloist Neil Michaels of Temple Israel
and the Hillel Day School Ruach Choir.
He is proud to have enlisted Jerry
Blackstone as conductor.
Blackstone, a Grammy winner, is
director of choral activities, professor
and chair of conducting at the University
of Michigan School of Music. Blackstone
met the cantor through composer Bruce
Adolphe, who served as adviser for the
composition.
"I'm always excited to work with new
pieces," Blackstone says. "This is a very
beautiful and powerful piece, and my
job is bringing insight to unify the parts.
I think the text will speak to people, and
I hope they feel a sense of community
and worship:'
Gross, who will sing the more tra-
ditional parts, was pleased when two
movements were presented this past
summer at the Cantors Assembly 2012
Mission to Germany, which took the
religious leaders to the Rykestrasse
Synagogue.
I Believe is about what people can
create together from having been so
affected by the Shoah," Gross says. "It's
about becoming strong again but having
so long to go. I hope ifs also a way to
come together.
"Every Jew is affected by the
Holocaust, but some are more affected
than others. This is my way of showing
gratitude that my grandmother survived,
and I'm here. That's why I dedicated I
Believe to her memory:'
