T emple Emanu-El of Oak Park members have hired Rabbi Arturo Kalfus to be the new rabbi for the congregation beginning July 1. Rabbi Joseph Klein, who has served the congregation since 1997, will be retiring to become rabbi emeritus. Lynn Cooper of Oak Park and Russell Wise of Huntington Woods co-chaired the search committee and led a diverse, committed group of 14 members. Rabbi Arturo The committee was Kalfus unanimous in its rec- ommendation, and the board of trustees and membership were also unanimously in support. Kalfus has been a rabbi in both larger and smaller congregations. He is cur- rently associate rabbi at Temple Beth Am in Miami and has also been with Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple in Cleveland, Temple Emeth in New Jersey, Temple Emanuel in Long Island and Temple Beth Emeth in Albany. Passionate about his role as rabbi, he said he looks forward to engaging his new congregation in worship, study and social connections. He will get down on the floor with the temple's tiniest tots and hold a scholarly conversation with college-bound students. He also said he will see that Emanu-El continues to grow by being inclusive and welcoming, and by reaching out to those who are unaffiliated. He expressed his eagerness to learn about and engage with Detroit's Jewish community. Kalfus brings with him his wife, Phyllis, and teen children, Ari and Lilah. He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and ordained at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York. In addition to study at HUC, he attended Columbia University, the Sorbonne, the Jewish Theological Seminary and received his bachelor's degree in Jewish history and Jewish philosophy from Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He speaks English, Hebrew, Spanish and French. Other interests include family camping, painting and "a great piano concert:' ❑ 41111111. Associates in Internal Medicine - 248-406-1000 5777 Maple Rd, Suite 140, West Bloomfield www.ipcmd.com 12 March 7 • 2013 1819740 his will be the year of decision with Iran:' Dan Mariaschin, executive vice president of B'nai B'rith International, told the 200 men from 16 local congregations who braved a snowstorm Feb. 26 to attend the 81st Annual Intercongregational Men's Club Dinner at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield. Mariaschin said the Iranians "con- tinue to obfuscate while the centrifuges continue to whir:' Iran will be a topic on President Obama's visit to Israel on March 20, which Mariaschin welcomed, though calling it "long overdue:' "They will talk about settlements, including borders and incitement:' as well as Syria, Egypt and the other upheavals in the region commonly referred to as "the Arab Spring:' Mariaschin applauded the "courage" of the Bulgarian government to say "that Hezbollah was behind the [July 2012 attack on the Burgas Airport that killed five Israeli tourists and the bus driver, and injured 32], and that it was funded from Lebanon:' Bulgaria put serious pressure on the European Union, which repeatedly declined to join the U.S., Canada and others who have classified Hezbollah as a terrorist organization. "Everyone has come up with an excuse" not to do so, he said, recalling Hezbollah and Iranian involvement in the 1994 bombing of the Jewish Community Center in Buenos Aires, killing 85 people, and Hezbollah's 1983 bombing of the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut, which killed 241. He also expressed deep concerns about Egypt, noting a recently discov- ered 2010 speech by now-Egyptian President Morsi castigating Jews in religious terms; the BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) movement on our nation's college campuses, which he calls D&D, demonization and dele- gitimization; and the United Nation's granting of the Palestinian Authority's request for an upgrade in status. Noting that the 1994 Camp David Accords told both Israel and the P.A. not to take unilateral moves and to negoti- ate directly, he said, "the Palestinians have made the conscious choice that the international community can do the heavy lifting for them:' instead of returning to peace negotiations with Israel. ❑
