February 28 • 2013 luscious mushroom soup made from his own exalted recipe, etc. Although not solely a sea- food restaurant, numerous water-swimming favorites like lobsters, mussels, sea scal- lops, fin fish, etc. are carefully looked over with an eagle eye to ensure freshness ... Daily deliveries and inspections also include meats, chicken and other non-seafood items. When Gourmet magazine called Steve & Rocky's "One of the Best Restaurants in America; it took in these salient features together with the striking preparation of its poached and pan-roasted salmon, short ribs, steaks, broiled cod, roast duckling, etc. Seating is no problem in the spacious, 200-capacity dining room with its pic- turesque surroundings and airy comfort where diners may listen to relaxing dinner music amid the partaking of carefully pre- pared cuisine ... Open seven days a week, Monday-Thursday, 11-10; Friday, 11-11, Saturday, noon-11; Sunday, 1-9. There has never been a question about the dining goodness ... It can be said without much doubt that Steve & Rocky's deserves the high-ranking accolades it has attained. Steve Allen and Rocky Rachwitz have achieved much more in the 15 years than they ever dreamed of ... but what Master Chef Milos Cihelka might silently have known someday would happen. HE'S BEEN TO Las Vegas more than 50 times for the shows and dining and always comes back to the local area with the same thought ... "Someday:' he'd say to himself, and each time with more certainty. That "someday" finally came as a reality for Joe Vicari, owner of the ever-growing large chain of Joe Vicari Andiamo Italian Restaurants, steak- houses, Rojo's, etc. among 23 dining spots plus his star- studded showroom on 14 Mile in Warren. His Joe Vicari Andiamo Italian Steakhouse is open in downtown Las Vegas' new D Hotel and Casino on Fremont Street ... Seating is for 120 with menu offer- "Rocky" Rachwitz, Master Chef Milos Chihelka, Steve Allen 1795640 62 T aking over the kitchen after a highly regarded, world-acclaimed certi- fied master chef had prepared the food for more than 10 years says many volumes, in itself, about the person supplanting the culinary giant. They were mighty big shoes to fill. Today, Steve Allen, the chef who took the place of Master Chef Milos Chihelka, with whom he had worked under at the Golden Mushroom in Southfield where Milos was executive chef and Reid Ashton's partner, is celebrating his 15th year as co-owner of his own restaurant ... Steve & Rocky's, Grand River, Novi, co-partnered by Steve Allen and Chuck "Rocky" Rachwitz, is the kind of restaurant that both have always wanted. The Steve & Rocky's eatery is like a mar- riage where both parties contribute to its success. Rocky was already owner of two other restaurants, Rocky's of Brighton and Rocky's of Northville, the latter he still owns ... But he had the fervent desire of partnering another restaurant with some- what of a more upscale dining selection. This is where Master Chef Milos gets big thanks in no small measure ... He introduced Steve to Rocky, his hunting friend, with proof that Milos sure knows a lot more than just food ... Between Rocky's food and business acumen and Steve's culinary skills, the togetherness was accomplished. In the 15 years since opening, it is esti- mated that almost 2 million people have entered Steve & Rocky's doors ... Dining has been on more than 125,000 pounds of perch, some 61,000 pounds of whitefish, about 42,000 pounds of duck and more than 21,000 gallons of Master Chef Milos' JN ings including one-half Italian dishes and one-half prime steaks and fresh fish. THE LAST TIME I SAW Max Pelicano perform was a couple of years ago at Andiamo Novi, and after raving about his fantastic performance, vowed not to fail seeing him again when he came back. His show in Novi was more a life recap of Elvis Presley, but recently at the Andiamo Showroom in Warren, Max's Las Vegas- like revue in "Elvis to the Max" was even more unbelievable ... There is hardly much doubt why Pelicano is considered among America's finest impersonator exponents of the wonderful late, great entertainer. His expressions, gyrations, varied move- ments and non-lip synching presentations are eerily amazing ... Even Max's gracious smile that has the ladies going ga-ga Next time he comes here, if you have or haven't seen Max, try not to miss him ... I have witnessed Elvis in person and certain- ly attest, along with so many others, that Pelicano's performance is a rare treat. IT BEGAN AS more of a convenience for customers, making delicious filled stru- del and mandelbrot to enjoy at both break- fast and lunch from opening to 3 p.m. clos- ing ... But the huge avalanche of requests was never expected ... Plus the fluffy omelets and other goodies, Rendezvous Cafe on the northeast side of Robins Nest, off Orchard Lake Road, just north of 14 Mile, West Bloomfield, not only have them to eat in, but also as carry-out. OLDIE BUT GOODIE DEPT. ... Two old Jewish men are strolling down the street when they happened to walk by a church. They see a large sign posted that says, "Convert with us and get $50." One of the Jewish men stops walking and stares at the sign. His friend turns to him and says, "Murray, what's going on?" "Abe," replies Murray, "I'm thinking of doing it:' Abe shouts, "What, are you crazy?" Murray thinks for a minute and says, "Abe, I'm going to do it:' And with that, Murray strides purposefully into the church and comes out 20 minutes later with his head devoutly bowed. "So," asks Abe, "did you get your $50? Murray looks up at him and says, "Is that all you people think of?" CONGRATS ... To Sy Manello on his birthday ... To Rose Kaluzny on her birthday ... To Melvin "Mel" and Sybil Markowitz on their 55th anniversary. ❑ Danny's email is dannyraskin@sbcglobaLnet.
