Important
Decisions
to Make
Welcome your parents
to a new home at
Regent Street.

It's a complicated world and you need
the best answers to difficult questions.
Even if you can afford the payments
on a house that is underwater - if you
leave it in your estate then when you
pass away the bank will claim the
deficiency against your estate. This
could deprive your children of your
desired inheritance.
Besides this, if you're living on social
security and a limited budget and have
too much credit card debt, hospital/
medical bills or are underwater, you
need to sit down with someone that
understands the situation and will
make sure you get the best possible
advice. You can't keep paying until you
are broke or become a ward of your
children.

Home
ven today, my mom and dad's
place is "home" to me. Do you find
— yourself saying that? I know I do,
even though it's not where I raised my
boys or devoted years of time cooking,
cleaning and making a life. It's "home"
because my parents are there, and I
know I will always be welcome.
I know that one day my parents —
because of failing health — may need to
leave that home and enter an assisted
living facility. That's OK, though. An
assisted living facility is a home in every
sense of the word.
As director for Regent Street, an
assisted living community in West
Bloomfield, I am aware of the emotions
involved with caring for aging parents.
I see it all the time and have walked
through it with many families. I recognize
the importance of finding the right new
"home" for your loved one.
Nearly 10 million adult children are
caring for aging parents, according to
the MetLife Mature Market Institute.
Many reach a point where they know
they can no longer do it alone, either
because their mom needs help with
bathing or dressing, or dad can't cook
his own meals and manage the various
medications he's taking. These adult
children go to work, sometimes sick
with worry that mom or dad might be in
trouble, and they don't even know it.
Obviously, our parents deserve quality
care and safe, clean living conditions —
that's a given you must expect from any
accredited assisted living community.
But we all know that it takes more than
that to make a home. It takes a family,
and the residents at Regent Street
become a kind of big extended family to
