Impact Of Federal Cuts
And Affordable Care Act
I was glad to represent the Jewish
Community Relations Council of
Metropolitan Detroit and our sister
Jewish agencies at the recent govern-
ment affairs institute of the Jewish
Federations of North America that
was held this month in Washington,
D.C.
Over three days, professionals and
lay leadership from Jewish federa-
tions, Jewish community relations
councils and Jewish family services
heard speakers and discussed several
pressing matters.
Issues included the impact of
planned federal budget cutting on the
Jewish community, the changes the
Affordable Care Act is bringing to the
Jewish elderly, and the possibilities
for Jewish agencies to collaborate with
hospitals and other healthcare provid-
ers to implement the Affordable Care
Act's changes to healthcare delivery.
Institute participants also took a
refresher on the importance of citizen
lobbying. During the institute, I vis-
ited the offices of U.S. Reps. Sander
Levin (D-Roseville), Kerry Bentivolio
(R-Commerce) and Sen. Carl Levin
(D-Mich.).
There, I discussed many topics
including safeguarding the charitable
deduction, keeping an adequate safety
net for our most vulnerable communi-
ty members, and the value of Medicare
and Medicaid to the Jewish elderly and
elderly Holocaust survivors.
I explained that a goal of the Jewish
community's network of social ser-
vice agencies is to continue a public/
private partnership — as they work
efficiently and with cost effectiveness

by combining charitable dollars and
cost-free volunteer hours, but also
utilize some federal and state funds to
serve clients in need.

federations' government affairs work,

Agunot Day Seeks
Marriage Equality
The National Council of Jewish
Women joins in observing the 10th
International Agunot Day — a day
designated to raise awareness for the
urgent need to address the denial of
legal equality in marriage of Jewish
women in Israel and around the
world.
Under religious law, a Jewish
woman may not receive a final writ
of divorce or get without her hus-
band's consent. Thousands of women
in Israel called agunot are unable to
remarry or have legitimate children
because their husbands have either
disappeared or refused to grant them
a divorce. There is no civil marriage
authority.
Agunot Day, Thursday, Feb. 21,
is observed on the Fast of Esther to
highlight the contrast in contributions
to Jewish life made by Jewish women
and their second-class status under
marital law. Queen Esther rescued the
entire Jewish community from a death
sentence, and yet was herself subject
to this denial of legal autonomy.
All of us need to act in support
of legal reform by calling the Israeli

Obama Visit Will Only
Put Pressure On Israel
The article "Israel Bound" (Feb. 14,
page 38) was, at best, wishful think-
ing. Unfortunately, it's much more
likely that Obama is traveling to Israel
for nefarious reasons.
Obama's consistent foreign policy
over the past four years has been
to endorse Arab/Muslim goals at
Israel's expense. Obama has sup-
ported Islamic extremists in the civil
wars that have been raging across the
Middle East. He has nurtured and
economically supported the Islamic
supremacists who now rule Egypt and
are openly belligerent toward Israel.
By his words and deeds, Obama
has essentially embraced the
Palestinian Authority's goal of replac-
ing the Jewish state with a 22nd Arab/
Muslim-controlled country. And his
passivity toward the Islamic dictator-
ship in Iran has encouraged their rac-
ing to acquire nuclear weapons. The
tyrants in Iran have said often and
loudly that their goal is to wipe Israel
off the map.
Given Obama's history, it's most
likely that he is going there to pres-
