insist that the agreement they wit-
nessed actually be honored.

Few Coattails
America has been far better than
Europe in this regard. But as the U.N.
votes on both the Goldstone Report
and recognizing "Palestine" show,
America is frequently unable to
bring its allies along. Hence, even
U.S. support isn't enough to make
an international guarantee worth
the paper it's printed on.
What emerges from the above
is that the model of the peace
process that has dominated
global thinking for decades — a
two-state solution on roughly the
1967 lines, with Israel's security
ostensibly assured by interna-
tional guarantees and an inter-
national force — has become a
nonstarter for most Israelis.
Though most still favor a two-
state solution, most Israelis aren't
going to sacrifice their security
for the chimera of an interna-
tional promise. This might not
have been true had the interna-
tional community acted differ-
ently over the past 20 years, but
it's the reality today. And anyone
interested in resolving the Israeli-
Palestinian conflict ignores this
reality at his peril.

Holding Firm
Personally, I don't think the con-
flict is solvable right now
Like the Cold War, it can only
be managed and contained until
some change makes it resolvable.
But whether one agrees or dis-
agrees with that, one thing should
be clear: Clinging blindly to the
failed mantras of the past 20 years
will be not only nonproductive,
but also counterproductive.

For as long as the world remains
fixated on a solution that cannot
work, it will never consider new
ideas that might be better.

True human rights advocates
should ignore the U.N. Human
Rights Council session in Geneva
this March, which will again almost
assuredly single out the Israeli
government for unfair abuse based
on its recently published incredulous
charge that Israel colludes with
violent settlers. They should instead
take lessons from the council's
competitor with integrity - the
Geneva Summit for Human Rights and
Democracy - presented by U.N. Watch,
an organization that focuses on real
human rights concerns and protests the
hypocrite dictators who sit on the U.N.
council. Visit www.unwatch.org .
