The Jewish Community: Detroit, Oak Park and Southfield Meet Martin Herman Karpov the Wrecked Train Contributing Photographer M eet Martin Herman, age 83, in his own words: "I have been associ- ated with the Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue since 1989. Both of my parents died in 1989, and by then, the Downtown Synagogue — which at that time still supported a daily min- yan — was the only remaining syna- gogue in Detroit and the only place at which I could say Kaddish. "I grew up in New York, not Detroit. I came to Detroit in 1962, hav- ing been recruited to the faculty of Monteith College, a unit within Wayne State University funded by the Ford Foundation to experiment in devel- oping new and more coherent ways of structuring the general education component of undergraduate degrees. "I currently live in Detroit's University District — between Six and Seven Mile roads, East of Livernois — in the same house that I bought in 1966:' ❑ 10 February 21 • 2013 NI
