I served with the 1st Marine Division during the Korean War. I was very well trained by the Marine Corps on every weapon we had at our disposal at the time. They not only taught us about the weapons, but also the extreme damage they do. They also taught us respect for human life, even on the battlefield, and to avoid civilian casualties. My respect for firearms is still with me today, and I can understand the writer's statements, which I quote: "Drunk driving isn't caused by cars, computers don't cause identity theft and fraud, and guns just don't go off by themselves!" These are profound statements and well thought out because they are true. I hope more people read that letter and ponder its relevance. The gun is only an instrument as is a knife or explosives or even a car. Let's concentrate on the cause, not the weapon and the multitude of use- less laws enacted against weapons while ignoring the root cause. Read why the Second Amendment was drafted and about all the respon- sible individuals that responsibly carry guns every day for your protection and mine. Dave George Auburn Hills Local Republicans Need To Be More Inclusive I write this note with sadness and opti- mism. My local Republican Party is broken. My comments may be harsh at times but are only meant to shine a light on some of our issues in order to make positive changes. I have been involved with Oakland Country Republicans for nearly 10 years. I have run in the past three elec- tions. Two years ago, I made sure that no county commission seat went with- out someone running. I currently and proudly sit on the executive board of the county party. I am a socially liberal, fiscally conserva- tive Republican. Unfortunately, our party has decided by their actions that they do not care about getting all branches of our local communities to vote and be proud to be Republican. This past Thursday, Feb. 7, we had our county convention. I have seen the conventions become smaller and small- er. I often wonder why I bother myself. Lack of inclusion is the issue at the heart of why we continue to get crushed in elections locally. Oakland County is made up of voters from all differ- ent belief systems and religions. The Republican Party should be about fis- cal responsibility, not about the moral views of some. Inclusiveness is no small issue. We have painted ourselves into a small box. We don't garner the support of Jewish, Black, Hispanic, Muslim, gay ... and the list goes on. One has to wonder — is there some truth when we are called a bigoted party? We used to be a big tent. There were lots of different views represented and discussed. We have become single- minded and bent on squashing dissen- sion. People who used to be called con- servative Republicans are now called moderates or "RINOs" [Republicans in name only]. The libertarian wing has been marginalized. We have successfully kicked out the Log Cabin Republicans. I can't imagine why Jews and Blacks don't want to associate with our party. Change must happen and quickly. If we hope to survive and be a majority party, we must be inclusive. Ezra Drissman Executive Board Member Oakland County Republican Party Jewish Peacemakers Must Be Prepared Regarding "Healing Rifts" (Jan. 31, page 8): 1.There is no place for vigilante Jewish "peacemakers" by people who are not specifically prepared for the task, knowing Islam in detail, Middle Eastern history, Jewish philosophy, etc. They have to be experts in public relations and must be pre-approved by major Jewish organizations. 2. The picture on page 8 says it all: Here sits Brenda Rosenberg, the soloist, with five Muslim men who are trained for years to propagate Islam. Brenda Rosenberg is no match. 3. Jews and Islam is a complex entity in which Jews were recognized initially but then rejected and threatened with extinction. 4. There is no way to change Islamic beliefs regarding Jews presently because it is part of Islam and the cause of its virulent anti-Semitism. 5. Brenda Rosenberg's philosophy is that Muslims do not mean what they say. In Germany, my father, like many European Jews, did not believe it either until October 1938 when he found out the hard way that the "Germans mean what they say!" This led to the Holocaust. 6. Islam has the concept of taqiyya, which means that Muslims can lie "if it is good for Islam!" 7. Jewish relations cannot ignore the murder of Jewish women, children and infants in the name of Islam. 8. It is impossible to perceive that while in America, Muslims talk peace; in Egypt, President Morsi and his clergy, Abbas and his cronies, Hamas and its covenant speak war. This is the true rift that has to change before any dialogue can start. Jews have always recognized and respect Islam (Maimonides). There is no rift between Jews and Islam. It is Islam that has a rift with Jews. 9. Anybody who supports Shariah law can have no dialogue with Jews who, like all infidels, are dhimmis, second- class citizens, discriminated against by Muslims. 10.Whoever has doubts about Muslim goals only has to go to Belgium (Brussels), U.K. (London) or Sweden (Melmo). Jews are attacked there daily; Jewish schools and synagogues are threatened and Jews are killed (Ilan Halimi in Paris). European Jewry is under attack, and it can spill to the U.S. The American Jewish community has to unite, get organized and prepare for the future. No Jewry can allow good- willed amateurs to represent the Jewish community in dealings with a well- organized, well-financed professional Muslim organization such as CAIR that knows well how to advance its goal to be a dominant power in America as it is in Europe. Yes - it is not a pipe dream, but it takes planning. Typically, credit card debts can be resolved in the range of 20% to 50%, depending on the issuing bank. If you're making the minimum payments (and probably struggling to do so), our goal is to resolve the debt, inclusive of legal costs, by using the minimum payments as a fund to settle the debt. In the end (approximately a year and 3-6 months) the debt is gone. At that point, you take the minimum payments and use them to fund an IRA or 401(k) plan so you have money to retire with. We do, however, need to examine the big picture, including tax consequences, to determine the best solution. Sometimes there are more effective strategies - and we make sure to pick the one that yields the smartest result. THAV GROSS has been solving its clients' business, tax and financial problems since 1982.
