T
here's a time warp of sorts
in the song-and-dance show
staged by Denise Rose portray-
ing Judy Garland and Suzanne Goulet
depicting Liza Minnelli.
Although appearing as mother and
daughter, the tribute artists make a lit-
tle magic out of age — they simultane-
ously perform the songs made popular
when both musical stars were in their
40s, their prime years.
Together Again, Judy Garland & Liza
Minnelli Direct from Las Vegas can be
seen Saturday evening, Feb. 16, at the
Berman Center for the Performing Arts
in West Bloomfield.
"I'm doing all the great Judy num-
bers — 'Over the Rainbow: 'Get Happy:
lock-A-Bye Your Baby'; and Suzanne
will do all the great Liza numbers —
'Cabaret; `Steppin' Out' and 'New York,
New York:" says Rose in a phone conver-
sation from Vegas. "We have plenty, like
`Together (Wherever We Go): which we
do together."
The two, moving to Goulet choreog-
raphy, are backed up by musical tracks
completed in the performers' original
arrangements.
Goulet, who has appeared as Liza
Minnelli in numerous tribute shows,
has toured Michigan with one that also
had entertainers impersonating Frank
Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis
Jr.
"We have a great time says Rose, a
baby boomer who has been a Garland
fan and impressionist since childhood.
"We have little bits of dialogue, but we
try not to be campy. We've worked at
having a warm and sentimental way of
presenting these women:'
Rose and Goulet met in Minnesota,
where Rose grew up and started enter-
taining as a singer, actress and standup
comic and where Goulet was touring.
They were introduced by Rose's former
husband, a standup comedian emceeing
the Goulet show.
"I moved to Las Vegas 12 years ago,
and in 2007, we found each other again:'
Rose recalls. "She had a Judy and Liza
HAPPY
NEW YEAR!
show she created after we first met and
was looking for another partner."
Although Rose had imitated what
she heard on Garland records and had
appeared in a Minnesota festival of Judy
Garland impersonators, she went on to
study Garland DVDs and Internet videos
to prepare for the touring production.
`All of these helped me with her
speaking voice," Rose explains. "I've had
to work at the way she sounded when
she was talking — without exaggerat-
ing.
Rose, whose parents were amateur
performers, has advanced from com-
munity theater during childhood, dinner
theater while in high school and various
stages with party and club bands. She
got drawn into comedy by her brother,
comic Paul Dillery, as well as her former
husband, Dean Johnson.
"The comedy helped me between
songs:' says Rose, who moved to Vegas
because it represented what she wanted
out of an entertainment career.
A fan of musical theater, she found
out about her Jewish background at
age 12, after seeing a Fiddler on the
Roof performance with her family. Her
mother, affected emotionally by the play,
explained that she had hidden her reli-
gion since the Nazi years in France.
"Judaism has been part of my identity
since then:' says the singer, who briefly
has been part of a temple choir. "I feel
Jewish in my soul because of my family
history:'
Rose, divorced and the mother of a
grown daughter, uses offstage time to
search for fabric that would be suitable
for creating the vintage outfits she wears
onstage.
"Our show is going to be 90 minutes:'
says Rose, who uses her middle name
as her last. "We're always thrilled to be
doing it:'
