Farmington Hills sees Obama's trip
as an opportunity to strengthen
already strong U.S.-Israeli ties.
"I am very pleased that President
Obama is carrying through on his
commitment to visit Israel during his
second term in office he said. "The
president's commitment to Israel's
security has been a key element of
his foreign policy.
"While at times I would have
preferred to see our president and
Bibi share a close personal relation-
ship, the key fact is that the stra-
tegic and historical base for strong
U.S. support for Israel as a prime
U.S. foreign policy interest remains
unshakable and will be strength-
ened by the visit.
"This visit comes after a year dur-
ing which the Obama administration
provided Israel tremendous support
against an aggressive anti-Israel
agenda in the U.N., complete and
unconditional backing during a dif-
ficult military operation in Gaza,
increased financial and military sup-
port to ensure Israel's continued mil-
itary edge and, finally, demonstrated
strong and steadfast commitment for
tough sanctions against Iran.
"There is no better statement to
show how strong is U.S. support for
Israel against the Iranian threats
than a personal visit by the president
to Israel."
Eugene Greenstein, president of
the Zionist Organization of America-
Michigan Region, said the president's
focus should be on the Iranian
nuclear threat.
"One would hope that the purpose
of President Obama's trip to Israel is
to demonstrate solidarity with Israel
and deliver a message to Iran that
a nuclear-capable Iran is unaccept-
able he said.
"The issue of peace is not about
land; it is about ideology. Hopefully,
the president has learned that from
his past four years. The P.A. maps
show one Palestine, not an Israel
and a Palestine. President Abbas still
names roads and squares after sui-
cide bombers and attackers.
"llamas still calls for the destruc-
tion of Israel and the Jewish people
in Article 7 of its charter and the
words of its leaders. The chaos in
Syria, Egypt and the rest of the
Middle East has nothing to do with
Israel and the Palestinians.
"Hopefully, the president will
focus on the threats from Iran to
world peace and the danger posed by
the Syrian chemical and biological
weapons"
