Sponsored by the ICC and MSU Hillel, all of the training sessions are taught by me and Felix Shoihat, the Israel Program Coordinator/Jewish Agency Israel Fellow at Michigan State University Hillel. The goals of ICAT include framing the conflict, teaching students basic advocacy skills and increasing each participant's confidence in being an advocate for Israel. Through this innovative program, we also seek to enhance Israel programming on campus and to engage uninvolved stu- dents in pro-Israel events. One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching the program is building relationships with my peers, while helping them to see that Israel is more than just a country of conflict. For the past eight years, Israel advocacy training was only open to MSU students. This year, because of a generous grant from ICC and with the partnership of the Hillel Campus Alliance of Michigan, we have been able to expand the program to Hillels at Western Michigan University, Central Michigan University and Grand Valley State University. Each of these campuses' Jewish com- munities is thriving, and the response we received during the application period was overwhelming. More than 50 students signed up to participate in this interac- tive training. Applicants included a wide range of Jewish students, including Taglit- Birthright Israel alumni, active Hillel board members and even non-Jewish students interested in learning more about Israel. Currently, a total of 40 students are participating in ICAT and are learning the building blocks to become a strong voice for Israel on campus. Once the training is complete, these students will be able to take what they have learned and share it with both their peers and stakeholders on campus. They will do this by building relationships with fellow students and participating in meaningful conversations surrounding Israel affairs. Our newly trained Israel advocates will be educating their peers who may know little to nothing about Israel. Following graduation, ICAT graduates will emerge from their training as confident Israel advocates, eager to participate in pro- Israel activities at Hillel, on campus and in their local communities. The Israel Campus Advocacy Training program is changing these campuses in many ways. Through outreach to various registered student organizations, student leaders are giving their peers an opportu- nity to learn about Israel as it applies to them. We are creating new partnerships and relationships to widen our pro-Israel network and are developing new student leaders to step into Jewish community leadership roles. Most importantly, by working at four universities, we are able to meaningfully impact campus communities throughout Michigan, leading to greater understand- ing of what Israel truly is. @ Jacob Shecter of Farmington Hills is a senior at Michigan State University in East Lansing.
